Invisible Capitalism: Japanese Capitalism & the Future of Global Capitalism
Wednesday, April 11, 6 PM
Capitalism today is based on economic and monetary values. This form of capitalism has reached its limits, as it cannot solve social and environmental issues. In order to shift to a more sustainable economic framework, many countries will need to transition to a new model of invisible capitalism, focusing on invisible capital such as knowledge, relationships, trust, reputation, empathy, culture and other values. In this program, Professor Hiroshi Tasaka from the Graduate School of Tama University in Tokyo shares his insights on invisible capitalism in Japan and the future of global capitalism. He also discusses how Japan can contribute to the evolution of capitalism in the 21st century.
Speakers:
Hiroshi Tasaka, Professor, Graduate School of the Tama University in Tokyo; President, Think Tank SophiaBank; Member, Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum; Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan (2010-2011); author of the book Invisible Capitalism: Beyond Monetary Economy and the Birth of New Paradigm; Ph.D. (Nuclear Engineering)

Organizer: FeelGood Organizer of A Special Evening with FeelGood and The Hunger Project
DATE AND TIME Mon, April 16, 2018 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EDT
LOCATION Impact Hub New York 394 Broadway New York, NY 10013 ... N Q R W at Canal Street
DESCRIPTION In celebration of Earth Week, join FeelGood, one of the NYC Impact Hub's 30 for 2030 organizations, as we host an evening where we explore the connection between extreme poverty and climate change. FeelGood, led by our new Executive Director Maritza Mejia-Wilson, will be cooking up grilled cheese in exchange for a small donation ($5), with all proceeds going to the Commitment 2030 Fund: FeelGood's coalition of non-profit organizations who are working to collectively fulfill the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. One of our C2030 Fund partners, The Hunger Project, will be present to share about their work and the way that environmental stewardship (goals 11-15) show up in their work around ending chronic, persistent hunger (goals 1-2) through gender-focused, community-led development.
FeelGood’s vision is to end extreme poverty by 2030. FeelGood chapters on campuses all across the nation make grilled cheese sandwiches in exchange for donations that are used to invest in organizations that are part of our Commitment 2030 Fund. We are using this initial foothold with students to not only raise substantial resources to be invested wisely, but also to change perspectives and build a mass social change movement that empowers everyone to be a change-making global citizen.

2020 Census: Tech Revolution or Risk? A Forum with Elected Officials and Civil Rights Organizations 2020 Census: Tech Revolution or Risk?
Monday, June 18, 2018
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Greenberg Lounge, New York University School of Law
40 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012
Register to Attend
On June 18th join us for a public forum with Congressman Adriano Espaillat, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and other community, tech, and civil rights leaders to discuss the unique ways the upcoming 2020 census may impact marginalized communities.
Although years away, the 2020 Census is already prompting fraught conversations around the country as the prospect of an inaccurate count exacerbates existing challenges for communities of color, immigrants, and others whose numbers have long been undercounted.
The 2020 Census creates two new concrete obstacles:
1. It will be digitally based, raising concerns regarding missing minority populations with disproportional access to digital connectivity, and raising the specter of data leakage for communities already feeling under threat.
2. It will for the first time contain a question about citizenship, suppressing response rates in immigrant households.
Following the 2010 census, 10 states lost congressional seats and New York stands to lose a Congressional seat as well as vital federal funding if significant sections of its population are undercounted again.
To address the potential shift in the balance of power and discuss action steps for ensuring a fair count, New America NYC and NYU's McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research have teamed up to produce an inaugural conversation on June 18th to highlight the necessity of early and sustained census preparation in keeping our democratic institutions equitably funded and accessible.

With fintech on the rise, many questions abound. How are traditional banks responding to the fintech revolution? Will banks and fintech companies engage in partnerships? How will the financial services landscape change in the years to come? In this program, our panel of experts discuss key trends that are driving fintech growth in Japan and the United States, the barriers and opportunities for fintech innovation, and the future of fintech and banking.

The New Story of Business Capitalism in the 21st Century
At Baruch College's Vertical Campus Conference Center 55 Lexington Ave (enter on 24th or 25th street) Room 14-220
on Thursday, Oct, 11, 2018!
12:00 - Registration and Lunch Networking Reception 12:45 pm - Presentation Begins 2:15 pm - Presentation Concludes
About the Program
A quiet revolution is sweeping the business landscape. The old story of business is slowly changing. There are many suggestions for a more human centered version of capitalism, such as conscious capitalism, inclusive capitalism, impact investing, socially responsible investing, etc. And there is renewed interest around the world in older ideas such as corporate social responsibility and sustainability. However these changes settle out, there are a number of key principles that are important. This program will focus on these principle that undergird this new story of business that is emerging. The principles include the importance of purpose, values and ethics, stakeholders, a more robust understanding of business as embedded in society, and a more complex idea of the human beings who are engaged in business.

Sven Herrmann, Programme Lead, Ellen MacArthur Foundation

REGISTERED FREE
NYU Africa House / Saturday, November 17, 2018 2:00PM-5:00PM (Doors open at 1:30PM)
New York University Kimmel Center, Rosenthal Pavilion (10th Floor) 60 Washington Square South
Many believe that economics and economists have an important role to play in creating better societies. The bedrock of the economic approach is the field of welfare economics which studies how to conceptualize and measure welfare with a view to designing better policies and institutions. It also allows ethics and economics to speak to each other. Yet, normative aspects of economics are sometimes dismissed as less scientific and therefore marginal to the discipline. And this is blamed, for example, for blinding economists to concerns about poverty and inequality. This conversation will focus on bringing ethical issues into economics, and the implications that this has for the practice and teaching of economics.
