CORE CONCEPTS

THE SOCIO-ENVIRO-ECONOMIC SYSTEM
SOCIO-ENVIRO-ECONOMIC ... HUMAN CAPITAL, MAN BUILT CAPITAL, NATURAL CAPITAL plus SUN The modern Socio-Enviro-Economic System is very complex, but with amazing potential. The challenge is to optimize decision making on top of a very complex system. The mathematics suggests that this cannot be done successfully, especially using the 'top-down' decision making that has been the norm throughout history. However, something vastly better than what exists today is possible, and a strating point for this is more appropriate meaningful metrics.

MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES
In a very complex interconnected system it is important to look at progress and performance from all the different possible perspectives. Since decisions usually result in outcomes that impact different elements of the system in different ways, keeping track of progress and performance from all perspectives is essential. This is missing from conventional accounting that is limited to the perspective of the reporting entity.

TRUE VALUE ACCOUNTING (TVA)
True Value Accounting (TVA) is a system for the measurement and reporting of impact on all the capitals based on conventional accounting, but designed to suit the modern complex world in a way that is both simple, easy to understand, easy to use and powerful. The system is designed to measure everything that really matters. It embraces some of the powerful concepts of double entry accounting and applies them not only to money transactions but to everything important not transacted in money.

HUMAN CAPITAL
It is HUMAN CAPITAL that is the most important part of the world's enviro-socio-economic system. The performance of every economic activity should be measured (1) by reference to what it contributes to quality of life and the increase of human capital; and (2) by reference to the amount of stress on natural capital through resource depletion and environmental degradation of many sorts.

It is social capital that connects PEOPLE as individials with PEOPLE as a community or a society. Sosical capital contributes to the quality of life of individuals and families ... and it is individuals and familities that also contribute to social capital. NATURE'S LIVING SYSTEMS
The living systems of nature ... including human beings ... are extremely complex and quite amazing. Despite the amazing growth in knowledge during the last century very little is known about the deep intricacies of these natural living systems. What is now known is that they are immensely important for sustaining the enviro-socio-economic system that is key to quality of life and standard of living.

RESOURCE DEPLETION, ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND ECOSYSTEM REMEDIATION
NATURAL CAPITAL has been diminished significantly since the beginning of the modern era ... since the start of the agricultural revolution and then the industrial revolution. There has been resource depletion and environmental degradation that has not been taken into account in the metrics of socio-economic performance and no credit given for ecosystem remediation, an activity now growing, but long overdue.

The goal of TVM and MDIA is to enable people to make better decisions. More progress will be made when 7.1 billion people behave better, than if 71 of the world's most powerful embrace better policies.
