The following graphic developed in 2016 by YourCause shows why CSR is completely meaningless as an element in making the world a better place, rather it is a way to make a corporate entity appear better in the eyes of the public and perhaps a way to make employees more productive and perhaps a little bit happier. This is not accidental. There are many who believe that CSR has improved profit performance as its 'raison d'etre' and as long as this is the way CSR is implemented it will completely fail to do much of significance to help make the world a better place.
The elements of the graphic are: Participation of employees (Note 1) Participation in giving Participation in volunteering Involvement in year round giving First time donors to disaster relief Growth year on year of international programs Consumers who will pay more for sustainable products Productivity of employees increased because of CSR Reduction in employee turnover Reduced pay arising because of CSR intiative The conclusion is simply that all of this has the basic goal of making a company look better from the perspective of the employee and the customer with the ultimate objective simply to be more profitable for the benefit of the stockholders.
