Is ESG truly fit for purpose, or is it merely a useful talking point merely aligned to marketing and promotion? My impression is that at its core ESG is fundamentally flawed as a key metric to achieve socio-enviro-economic sustainability. The idea that the corporate implementation of an ESG strategy will improve profit performance is not credible because meaningful impact requires substantial redesign of products and their means of production and this requires significant investment and redirection of resources. For some years this will lower profit performance, though not in the longer term. I argue we need much clearer numbering of social impact, environmental impact and economic impact in everything that is done so that there is sustainable balance between these three critical impacts, and that these numbers should be the basis for meaningful corporate valuation!
