Professor Klaus Schwab was born in Ravensburg, Germany in 1938. An engineer and economist by training, Klaus is Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
The Forum began in 1971. That same year, Klaus published a book arguing that managers of a modern enterprise must serve not only shareholders but all stakeholders, to achieve long-term growth and prosperity. He has championed this concept since the Forum began, and under his leadership, it has been a driver for reconciliation efforts in different parts of the world, acting as catalyst for numerous collaborations and international initiatives.
In 1998, with his wife Hilde, he created the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
Recognising the need for younger voices in global decision-making, he established the Forum of Young Global Leaders (for leaders under 40) in 2004. In 2011, he created the Global Shapers Community (for those between the ages of 20 and 30).
Schwab has encouraged the establishment of communities providing global expertise and knowledge for problem-solving. Among them is the Network of Global Future Councils, comprising more than 1,500 of the most relevant experts related to global, regional and industry challenges.
Klaus Schwab holds doctorates in Economics (summa cum laude) from the University of Fribourg, in Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and a Masters of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In 1972 he became one of the youngest professors on the faculty of the University of Geneva. He has received numerous international and national honours.

The annoying kid in class whose hand was in the air first - that was me. New ideas, new ways of thinking and the thrill of putting them together are still what motivate me. My passion for science fiction lead me to the University of Manchester, where I gained a first in Theoretical Physics and learnt vital campaigning skills as a member of the organising committee of a student human rights society. Whilst I had always had a knack for cutting to the core of complex ideas - and sometimes controversial political positions - I discovered that the confidence and passion that comes with belief in what you do can inspire everyone you work with. Wanting to delve deeper into the mysteries of the universe, I conducted research towards a PhD on the ATLAS experiment using data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, aka the 'big bang' machine. The big bang is pretty cool but for me lacked a vital focus - people. I relish opportunities to apply my geek credentials to solve problems that really matter to various stakeholders. A dawning realisation that a career in economics would combine my dual passions of quantitative analysis and social equality has led me to pursue what I hope to be a fulfilling new path. My work in the voluntary sector has given me useful insight into some of the issues surrounding welfare, employment and poverty that I am currently exploring from an exciting new perspective by studying for an MSc in economic policy.
