Impact investing is becoming increasingly popular, but the metrics for this are confusing. The modern socio-enviro-economic system is unsustainable and rapidly getting worse. How do you measure this unsustainability as you think about investing for impact? We must change metrics to change behavior!

There are a lot of inspiring young people, but there are also a large number of bad actors ... people and institutions ... that get in the way and dominate the agenda. I want to be optimistic, but am of the view that as long as profit and wealth are the most respected metrics of success, then there is little hope. This explains why my dream is to reinvent conventional financial accountancy so that it gives equal weight to social and natural capital impact as it does for money profits. Throughout my 30+ year career as a management consultant, an entrepreneur and an executive in national and multinational organizations, I've been fortunate enough to identify and act on some major trends in business over that time. Early in my career it was personal financial planning, and an opportunity to start my first business under the support and leadership of the credit union system in Canada. Then it was on to starting my own data mining consultancy, back before anyone used the term 'Big Data,' which took me on a fifteen-year journey through several mergers, an acquisition and a management stint with one of the world's largest and most successful marketing services agencies. And now I have the privilege as a management consultant to apply all that I have learned and done in my career to advance the cause of impact investing, an idea that I believe has the potential to significantly change the way we manage our personal wealth and benefit society at the same time. I'm committed personally to reflecting and aligning my family's own investments with our values. I'm committed professionally as a member of Toniic and as an advisor to other organizations in the growing impact investing sector, to broaden and deepen the community of like-minded investors with the same commitment. I feel privileged that all of my experience and background have led me to this space, and I would welcome the opportunity to connect with you if you or your organization feel the same need to create positive social and environmental impact.

Nixon Childs
Nixon Childs 1st degree connection1st at BVIresources Group Temple, Georgia BVIresources Group, LLC Western Kentucky University Western Kentucky University Nixon Childs is the creator and founder of BVIresources Group, an online, automated business website that specializes in identifying, creating, and securing Market Ready (MR) businesses via trained and Licensed Consultants called Market Ready Consultants (MRC). Over the past 22 years, Nixon developed new methods, tools, and processes to help Advisors provide their clients who plan to sell their business someday with better options than accept low-ball offers or shut down. With these tools, advisors can alert their clients using a strategic valuation to determine the level of probability their business can be sold; its $ potential to improve its value or attract buyers, and the $ risks to its value being discounted if sold - usually 20% to 30%. To secure the investment, he created the 5 Step Market Ready and Surveillance Programs. Risk Management at a high level. A critical component of BVI's MR System came in 1975 when Nixon was a primary team member at an Army communication facility of 3200 employees. His team was tasked by Congressional directive to pilot test a zero-based planning method to better manage and control spending. At the end of the pilot year, the team showed a $850 net operating result of a $350 million budget. Today, BVI's Market Ready (MR) Program to Optimize the Value and Secure the investment operates under a similar concept and comprises a major part of BVI's 5 Stage Program. This system addresses a major gap that leave 900,000 potentially marketable businesses failing to sell and shutting down. For those businesses that do sell, 95% will have their value discounted 20% to 30%. Today, a MRC can help a business owner go from a 90% predictable failure rate to a 98%+ success rate. Dr. Visser ... I am impressed by your record of accomplishment, and relative to you, my work pales into insignificance. But I come from a different trajectory of work, not academic at all but very much to do with trying to 'move the needle' for progress and performance. I was a very young CFO in the private sector and later on did independent consulting work for the World Bank, the UN and others where the goal was to make the world a better place and to minimize the mess that people were faced with. Bottom line, there were totally inadequate management metrics for every issue associated with social performance or environmental performance, and I argue that this has to change ... and change fast. Post career, that is what I am trying to do ... but it is entirely possible that you are already there ... in which case, congratulations. Not sure about a next step ... but reaching out just in case! Best PeterB

Peter Burgess 10:52 AM Sustainability is an incredibly important issue. I worry that our modern global economy is dangerously unsustainable and will remain so unless we completely rethink the flows through the socio-enviro-economic system. Bluntly put, we consume too much ... that is the world's rich top 50% of the population ... and the profit motive means every business pushes for more consumption which makes the situation worse and worse. Sadly ... isn't this the basic business of Salesforce? What might be the answer to this conundrum? PeterB

I'm curious what some of your biggest wins have been, what your biggest challenges are to developing and implementing true value metrics, and what solutions you believe are needed to see true value metrics used to the extent that traditional financial metrics are.
PeterB Thanks for your message / inquiry. It is not easy to answer because most of my most valuable work has been done quietly and in some way, by others. As you may have learned, I read engineering at university, but rather than doing post-graduate work in more specialized engineering I moved on to economics. After college, I worked in heavy engineering during the global boom in steel mill construction but realized then that all the really big decisions were being made by people with financial background. This was before the MBA became fashionable ... so I articled with Cooper Brothers (that eventually became Coopers and Lybrand and then PwC) and became a Chartered Accountant.
The accountancy construct of balance sheet and P&L accounts is very much like typical engineering equations ... simply using money as the measure rather than real physical metrics like mass, distance, time, etc.
Perhaps my most visible good work was development planning for Namibia after its independence in 1991. The plan helped raise around $700 million for a country with a population at the time of around 1.3 million ... perhaps the best fund raising exercise ever for the UN. There were 3 of us that did this work ... one to interact with the new President, one to work with the new Ministers, and me to work with the more tangible proposed programs and projects ... which meant that I had to number them in a coherent way.
A year later I did almost identical work with the UN in Afghanistan, but in this case the work resulted in zero funding ... worse development assistance funding that had been flowing to Afghanistan and Pakistan during the Soviet era stopped and both these countries spiraled down ... and then worse with the military involvement of bombs and bullets and soldiers and multiple trillions of dollars of global stupidity.
Accountancy is a very powerful management tool ... it is at the center of every corporate management information system, and the profit metric is pretty clear within the corporate structure. At the Board level and the C-suite the key measure is usually a combination of profit and stock price. So far so good. The problem is that the rules of modern accounting mean that everything related to society and the environment is excluded ... and in my view we now have very efficient profit optimization but next to nothing numbering social progress and environmental progress ... that is environmental degradation and depletion.
Part of the success of conventional accountancy is that it is essentially very simple. The big problem with numbering social performance and environmental performance is that so far there is no simple way of compiling the data and doing the reporting. My thinking on this is based in part on my experience as a very young CFO who participated in a quite substantial company reorganization and landed up running the factory (about 1,300 employees) in addition to running the accounting / admin. To everyone's surprise I almost tripled the factory output using data in a way that was effective for timely decision making. The data were relevant, timely and helped everyone to make better decisions ... but the basic factory structure existed.
When I got into the work of development and humanitarian crises, I always did what I could to work with data ... facts ... and in most cases projects were really difficult because the essential structures for progress and performance were missing .... I have been involved with hundreds if not thousands of project supervision / evaluation missions and in most cases they cannot work because the surroundings won't allow it. This idea did not sit well with high level staff at the World Bank, the UN and others who were well trained intellectually, but not so much practical and realistic!
And of course there is bribery and corruption. My career started to fall apart when I started to ask not so much who was getting the money, but who were writing the checks. Bribery is one of the most effective way to improve corporate profit performance ... and over time a surprising amount of this bad behavior has been made legal.
Post career is being fun ... and there is a fighting chance that the accountancy profession and young managers will embrace something like TrueValueMetrics.org to number progress and performance in a better way ... I am not there yet, but I am getting much closer.
Please stay in touch ... TVM is very much a work in progress being built on a variety of experiences. The biggest constraint is probably that most people in the USA think about things from a US perspective ... the same for Europe ... the same for China ... Africa ... India ... Russia. Financial accountancy has gone global, but social and environmental priorities are much more diverse! Al the best ... PeterB

At the age of 12, I knew I wanted to be an engineer - not a mechanical or electrical engineer, but a business engineer. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Why? Simply put, I wanted to bring ideas to life. Oftentimes, this means creating new products and services - or entire businesses. I didn’t want to bring just any idea to life though, I wanted to provide real value to the world. “So many people have really cool ideas, but so few are able to turn them into reality.” - 12 y/o Ethan Over the past 11 years, I have learned about entrepreneurship & business management, economic development, and poverty alleviation. I believe that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime, but if you teach a man to build a fishing business, you'll feed his entire village for generations. Peter Burgess sent the following message at 10:34 PM View Peter’s profile Peter Burgess Peter Burgess 10:34 PM Jacque ... I can relate to you in the sense that there was a time when I was having a very successful corporate career. My last permanent corporate job was as CFO of a company with a lot of international activities, and I saw some of the absolute misery and poverty at the 'bottom of the pyramid' (BOP). Later I got consulting work with the World Bank, the UN and others, and was very disappointed at the absence of management understanding and accountability in the field of international development and humanitarian assistance. This work is critical to a decent world, and I really do want to see significant improvements in the way the socio-enviro-economic system performs. I am glad that there is growing interest in impact investing and corporate 'purpose'. but concerned that there are a lot of words but almost no numbering. We need to 'move the needle' and in my view this required the right metrics! Happy to talk (Skype maybe) in the next few days ... Peter

MESSAGE 181205 ... I love this 'I believe we can work hard, have fun, make history and be sustainable all at once.' but how? The modern materialistic consumption oriented world is only environmentally sustainable if 90% of the world remains poor to subsidize the rich 10% and that is a formula for another disaster, that of social unsustainability. There has to be a way ... but the same old same old is not going to get us there. It's a challenge! Best wishes. PeterB

I am concerned about managing unsustainability. How unsustainable are food and beverages? What is their social impact? What is their environmental impact? What cumulative damage has been done to society and the environment by Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola? How does SASB plan on numbering these things?

I graduated from Cambridge in 1961 after reading engineering and economics. Later I qualified as a Chartered Accountant. I worked for a long time in the corporate world and then did consulting work for the World Bank, UN, etc. Just how unsustainable is the modern world? How can we number this?

With 29 years of experience at Procter & Gamble in Brand Management and Innovation, Virginie has a broad experience across multiple categories and global to local brand management expertise. Virginie has worked across several of P&G’s multi-billion dollar brands, including Pantene, Ariel/Tide, and Pampers, and has extensive international experience having been based in France, UK, Switzerland and the United States throughout her career. Since 2011, Virginie’s focus has been on sustainability and corporate citizenship, with a global remit covering all brands and business units, in all regions. Her mission was to embed sustainability into the innovation, brand-building and everyday business practices at P&G. In 2016, she was promoted to Vice President of Global Sustainability, in recognition of the work she has led to make sustainability a core business strategy, an innovation driver and a catalyst for a more resilient organisation. Even though Virginie recommended the creation of this new position, her vision has always been for the role to become obsolete, with sustainability embedded in everything P&G does as second nature. As she puts it: “Innovation and communication will not be conceived without sustainable groundings.” Prior to her current position, Virginie was the Western Europe Franchise Leader for Ariel, one of P&G’s largest brands, where she turned Ariel into the leader in sustainability through the launch of the highly successful “Cool Clean/Turn to 30” campaign and the most sustainable laundry product (Excel Gel). Beyond her brand and innovation expertise, she is a certified coach and widely recognised for her vision, change management and leadership development skills. Virginie lives in Geneva, Switzerland, with her husband and 3 children. This media is a link This media is a link This media is a document This media is a video This media is a document +2

I am an enthusiast for accountancy for decades and especially the idea that accountancy should also embrace issues like social impact and environmental impact as well as economic impact aka profit and stock market value. SASB is an important initiative, but my approach would have been different!
