I was pretty happy when Peter Eigen left the World Bank and started TI ... but 25 years later I am somewhat disappointed. Corruption seems to be as virulent as it ever was, and the question is why? What is being done wrong? When I was doing consulting work for the World Bank in the 1980s and 1990s, I was appalled at the incredibly weak accounting and accountability throughout the WB, the projects and the beneficiary governments and enterprises. Without rigorous accounting, corruption flourishes, and to my mind this is the single biggest weakness in the modern socio-enviro-economic system ... and worse, the accountancy profession does not seem to be moving into the modern world in the way that is needed. At this point in my life, I should be relaxing on the beach, but instead I am passionate as ever about getting to grips with corruption in every possible way ... and with that best wishes in all your efforts ! Several decades ago I concluded that place was a critical determinant of socio-economic performance. Place was not a country but a community, and every community was different. For development to be effective this had to be the foundation for everything. This was not a popular idea at the time!

ACAUS ... the Association of Chartered Accountants in the USA. I shared an office in Manhattan with Angus McDowell (and Sandy Needham) for several years in the 1980s. We worked collaboratively and independently but we were all Chartered Accountants. ACAUS was one of the initiatives and Angus became the first President of ACAUS and then later Sandy but not me! I was spending a lot of my time doing consulting assignments around the world for the World Bank, the UN and others which continues to inform my world view and my priorities.
In terms of contacts in London and New York ... or anywhere for that matter, I have aged out of useful active contacts ... and your generation does not see any point in sharing opportunities with me. Seeding Donor Advised Funds for Impact Deals!

It was 2014 when we realized seed stage impact investing was going to be a key part of ImpactAssets. That spurred Lindsay Smalling (now the Producer of SOCAP), Jed Emerson (ImpactAsset’s Senior Fellow), and me to write Seeding the Future, an issue brief that examined the landscape of seed stage investing through the eyes of entrepreneurs, accelerator leaders, seed stage funders, and foundations within the seed stage ecosystem of impact investing. Our goal in writing the brief was to provide greater clarity within the field in order to reveal previously unseen opportunities and gaps. ImpactAssets was also propelled to offer a test selection of 10 VilCap and Better Ventures seed stage deals to our clients. We had started that year with just over $100 million in total assets. Since then we have built a portfolio of more than 250 early stage deals invested as part of a fast growing $440 million donor advised fund with almost 1,000 clients. What is even more amazing to me is that we averaged more than one early stage deal each week in 2017, and we see that accelerating. Begin Preparing for The Next Wave of Impact Investors It’s not so much a vision we have of seed stage as part of our future work, it’s more of an actuality careening at us. This is at the heart of what is compelling to the next wave of impact investors, and you build for it, lean into it, or it is going to either swamp you or go around you if you’re a donor advised fund that wants to cater to the next generation. Because donor advised funds (DAFs) aggregate among multiple accounts, they can drive down minimums by grouping investment. Additionally, since individuals receive a tax deduction when they open a DAF (since it is in fact a charitable donation), one might view the tax benefit as an initial “return” at the point of investment. Individuals understanding this tax deduction nuance may catalyze more support for patience over the long term that these early-stage investments demand. And, by utilizing seed funds and accelerators, DAFs can further diversify to get more clients in at more manageable levels. Taking this Work to the Next Level at SEED 2018, April 19-20 in SF ImpactAssets is showing up in force to the inaugural SEED conference in April, bringing entrepreneurs from our portfolio, and inviting clients and key wealth advisors, because we feel we need to take what we have prototyped to the next level. We want to make our platform excellent, compelling, and scalable as this client hunger heats up! We want to leverage this work for others that wish to fast follow us or partner, so we’re hoping that the donor advised fund market shows up in force to compare notes and figure out how to leverage common infrastructure and capabilities, syndicate deals across client bases, and build for the $100 billion donor advised fund segment. Ha! Antony Crockett - try the other end of the percentiles! To be honest, it's a bit of a hodge-podge list, I think heavily tilted towards companies and others active in conflict minerals and/or modern slavery - hard to tell without the methodology laid out...but 6,000 people is a decent sampling. Congrats on your well-deserved Chambers recognition! Hope all is well.

My current work is focused in three communities that I have helped create: The Exit Planning Exchange which brings long-term thinking to the private company market. The Integrated Reporting U.S. Community which brings long-term thinking to public companies. And Smarter-Companies, a specialty consulting community around intangible capitalism.
My career started in the world of hard assets and finance with 15 years in high risk lending at Citicorp and Sanwa. In 1999, I started a strategy consulting firm. As I helped my clients adapt to changing markets and changing expectations, I saw firsthand how the financial models I had used as a banker were failing to capture the value being created (and destroyed) in the form of human, digital, natural and relationship resources. Most of my work since then has been aimed at developing practical approaches for companies to see, build and communicate these critical forms of value.
I am the co-author of Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st Century Organization which outlined approaches I developed to support systems thinking, integrated value creation and a multi-capital framework. This kind of approach is now gaining greater market acceptance thanks to the work of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), a movement I am actively supporting. I’ve been blogging regularly since 2006 and have contributed to numerous scholarly and business publications.

About ... As the SVP for the Danone 2025 Health Mission, I am exploring the new frontiers of sustainable development and innovation while developing a long-term vision. I am currently focused on our 'One planet, One health' project in which we aim to tackle a major global challenge: the essential transformation of the current food model. This challenge cannot be solved by one person or company alone, it requires cooperation and innovation on a global scale.
I have worked towards this for many years, and both the journey and the destination have come about thanks to a natural spirit of adventure and curiosity. This spirit has always opened the door to new and unexpected opportunities, and if I had to live my life all over I wouldn’t change a thing.
My approach is defined by a combination of trust and risk-taking, of rationality and intuition. It is this that enables me to uncover simple solutions to complex problems. I have also been fortunate in that, first at Unilever and then Danone, I evolved in international environments where taking the initiative and working towards personal growth were valued and encouraged. At the same time, supportive leaders challenged and inspired me as I made my way to discovering and defining my next roles.
Each and every one of us can be a change actor. We can improve the current system in countless ways and explore innovative solutions in areas of biodiversity, seeds, sustainable food, and waste management.
Fascinated by the food industry, and in particular the impact of child nutrition, I am also intrigued by the currents that shaped, and continue to shape, mankind. Ranging from religion, to molecular biology, to societal trends, I strive to improve my understanding of the world we live in and to support progress by exchanging ideas and instigating debates.
