Dear Akther
Thanks ... it was great to meet you as well. I enjoy the Cambridge in America events. They remind me of very good times a very long time ago ... and they give me incentive to continue to try to do something that is worthwhile.
Of course, now I am essentially 'post career' ... but I have touched on some of the same steps you have taken including doing (consulting) work with the World Bank (including India), and working with accounting firms (Coopers and Lybrand) as well as corporate work getting companies to make more profit.
I migrated into international development and humanitarian work somewhat by accident. Essentially I failed to get corporate consulting work in the USA but did get international work which I found incredibly interesting and worthwhile ... though I never made much money at it.
I watched the emergence of mobile phones from the third world ... and mobile money. Do you know Naila (H) Chowdhury by any chance. She had a big role in putting together all the bits to make it possible for Grameen Phone in Bangladesh to emerge. I now live primarily in the Poconos of Pennsylvania where where connectivity is worse than in the Sahara. I am not quite sure what 5G is all about, but a friend tells me that the pace of technical development is more robust than the old Moore's Law for integrated circuits!
I am working on / dreaming about how to bring conventional financial accountancy into the 21st century by (1) enhancing the basic framework so that there is accounting and accountability for all the activities, all the capitals, all the actors for everything from every perspective including, people, place, product, process (using inter alia a concept somewhat like standard cost accounting and variance analysis) and (2) doing all of this on top of some sort of ubiquitous technology platform so that the big economic players cannot hide behind their profitable but bad behavior. I like the idea of everything, every place, (and maybe anyone who wants) having a standard value profile that gives incentive to doing things that will make the world a better place (starting with oneself and one's own little world) but more than anything else making sure that profitable companies are also being held to account for their social impact and their environmental unsustainability.
This is a challenge ... but it keeps me out of trouble ... and occupied.
So best wishes ... have fun ... do good!
Peter
