GOVERNMENT
Quality of Government (Governance) is very important
GOVERNANCE ... A BIG PROBLEM SINCE ANCIENT TIMES
SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE HISTORY WE KNOW

GREEKS and the idea of Democracy
In ancient Greece there was a vibrant discussion about how society needed to be managed. The idea of people having a role in the management of society was written about during this time ... though it must be remembered that it was only a certain class of people who were included in the concept of 'Demos'

ROMANS and their framing of laws
The laws that governed the Roman Empire more than 2,000 years ago remain part of the foundation of modern law.
TPB note: My recollection as a student at Cambridge in the late 50s is that first year law students spent a good part of their first year studying Roman Law because of its role in the history of British Law.

The Magna Carta and delegation of power
It is more than 800 years since the Barons in Britain confronted King John and called for him to relinquish his absolute control over the country. While the Magna Carta was thought to be an early case of liberty for the people of the country, in fact it was much more to do with the redistribution of power at the top of society between the King, the Barons and the Church. Nevertheless the ideas expressed in this document from 1215 were very includential in the way the founding documents of the United States were written.
