PEOPLE - QUALITY OF LIFE
HEALTH

THE HUGE VALUE OF GOOD HEALTH
Being well in mind, body and spirit is a really happy place to be. Getting to be in the place is not achieved by indulgence or worse over-indulgence in the present, but by being somewhat thoughtful about how today's behavior will impact the future.

HEALTHY EATING
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Some health eating practices are fun, but many are rather boring compared to what is possible. A lot of food that is unhealthy is very tasty and fun to eat, while a lot of food that is good for you is not so exciting. Worse, a lot of tasty food that is unhealthy is also subtly addictive and creates cravings for more. This is good for the profits of companies producing and selling food products, but less good for the customers who get to eat the products.

BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH
TPB note: I am 77 years old as I write this (in early 2017). 60 years ago I made a good decision. Like most 17 year olds my friends and I were exploring possibilities, and one of these was the idea of smoking. It turned out that after two 'puffs', I hated the idea of smoking and have never been involved with smoking ever since. I know that smoking is addictive, and I know that for some people smoking 'calms the nerves'. For me ... I was simply repulsed by the whole idea of smoking. For my parents smoking had a different trajectory. They we young in the 20s and 30s when smoking was 'fashionable' and they smoked a little in social settings. But then came the war. We lived in the outskirts of London and very early in the war, early in 1940 my parents built a bomb shelter in the garden. It was a reinforced concrete box about 8' X 8' X 8' in size deep under the ground with about 3 feet of earth on top. I was an infant. I did not know anything of what was really going on, but my parents did. Social smoking ended and smoking to calm the nerves began. This led to addiction and an inability to quit, not matter how hard they tried. Eventually my mother died from emphysema ... a smoking related ailment. So I was lucky. I made a decision not to smoke, and 60 years later my health is far better than it would have been if I had become a smoker ... in fact, statistically I might well have already died!
TOBACCO INDUSTRY BEHAVIOR

The major industry actors in the tobacco industry put profit before everything else for a very long time. The industry was one of the most profitable for most of the 20th century. Investors in the industry were content with the industry performance and did not want to change the status quo. Government became addicted to the sale of tobacco products because it had become an important source of tax revenue.

Scientists were employed by the tobacco industry to do studies to show that tobacco and smoking were not the cause of bad side effects. The basis for this was not good science but good business.

Scientists were also employed by the industry to enhance the addictive nature of tobacco.

The tobacco industry was one of the biggest users of advertising in all its manifestations.

TOBACCO INDUSTRY ACCOUNTABILITY

It took a very long time, but eventually there was some accountability for the behavior of the tobacco industry.

THE MODERN TOBACCO INDUSTRY'S BEHAVIOR

Better, but by no means everywhere. Where there are weak regulations, the industry behaves as badly as it always has. The industry uses a variety of tactics to hide its history, including renaming the companies so that it is difficult to associate the modern companies with the old history.
