THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR
ARGABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL SECTORS
For most of history, mankind has been short of food ... but in recent years there has been enough food now for everyone, yet the distribution of food means too many remain hungry and others choose to eat foods that is addictive, lack in nutritional and bad for wellness.
There has been a 'green revolution' in the past 50 years, but the high yields associated with monoculture are creating long term unintended consequences that cannot be ignored. These include deterioration of soils, excessive use of water, pesticides and herbicides which are degrading the environment in a variety of ways.
Agriculture is big business with amazing levels of production per acre ... but the unintended consequences of high yields is not taken into account with conventional accounting metrics.

BEEF CATTLE

Cattle convert vegetation into protein ... that is meat.
Raising livestock to produce meat has impact on the land where it is used for grazing.
The production of feed for cattle has an impact on the land as well.
Air and water pollution are also associateed with cattle.
Compared to vegetables, meat has much more negative impact on the environment.
Vegetables are also better for human wellness.

GRAIN
The United States and Canada produce a huge amount of grain. It is a very big business and highly mechanized. Farms are increasingly managed using sophisticated technology to optimize the application of fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides and irrigation water. This is important because of the scale of the industry and the damage to the environment that has resulted from past practices.
There are ongoing issues because the main goal of agriculture is to maximize profit, and the prevailing metrics do not included appropriate measures for impact of people and the vnironment.

PALM OIL
Palm oil is a major ingredient in a wide range of processed foods. As the production of processed foods has increased the demand for palm oil has increased and the need for land has also increased. Much of the new land being used for palm oil production is being obtained by large scale deforestation. There are many initiatives to limit deforestation but this has proved difficult to do for a variety of reasons.

Some of the waste is caused by the inefficiency of distribuition channels, some by cosmetic standards imposed by supermarkets and some by laziness on the part of consumers. The truecost of this waste is huge, but ignored in conventional economic analysis

To determine the ANDI scores, an equalcalorie serving of each food was evaluated. The following nutrients were included in the evaluation: fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, vitamin A, beta carotene, alpha carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin E, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, choline, vitamin K, phytosterols, glucosinolates, angiogenesis inhibitors, organosulfides, aromatase inhibitors, resistant starch, resveratrol plus ORAC score. ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is a measure of the antioxidant or radical scavenging capacity of a food. For consistency, nutrient quantities were converted from their typical measurement conventions (mg, mcg, IU) to a percentage of their Dietary Reference Intake (DRI). For nutrients that have no DRI, goals were established based on available research and current understanding of the benefits of these factors. To make it easier to compare foods, the raw point totals were converted (multiplied by the same number) so that the highest ranking foods (leafy green vegetables) received a score of 1000, and the other foods received lower scores accordingly.
