In rural Tanzania, we meet Janet whose story depicts the physical barriers to getting to a well-equipped clinic or hospital with a trained medical professional in a timely fashion. Janet must walk five miles in labor to reach a local health clinic that has no electricity, no extra blood supply, no operating room, and no doctor regularly on site. When her labor is obstructed there is no mechanism to transport her to the nearest hospital. We can see in this story that in many rural places, such as the sub-Saharan region, infrastructure, electricity, equipment, supplies, emergency transport and more skilled health workers are needed to meet the growing demands.
