Thanks, Peter.
I happened to get up at 5:30 AM this morning, to find Linda, my wife, looking at the TED 18 minute video ....I watched part of it with her, especially your 'graphs' where the 'spots' move around. A Terrific illustrative process.
Two points:
1. Linda shared this with her Business Professor, who has spent some years in Africa getting 'micro economic' things started [he is a 'jet pilot' and was involved in the Ross Perot getting the contras or whatever they were called, out of Iran, back during the time he did work in Africa ... interesting guy]; anyway, Linda would like to incorporate some of this TED stuff in her BUSINESS ETHICS and other BUSINESS ECONOMIC courses ...
2. Steve Nuchia, who got you connected to me, and I and with your help, would like to develop a CLOUD COMPUTING demonstration for the stuff you are doing ....I'm not sure if Steve mentioned this to you or not. But Steve is very interested in the CLOUD DATA ANALYSIS and has the ability to do this, but in 'our spare time', as we have other programming goals asigned at StatSoft to meet it current 'paying priorities'....e.g. we normally do NOT develop new software until a company will pay for its development, as that shows that 'it is really needed' ...... that way we can put 40% of our revenue into development, something most companies cannot do anymore, and still stay financially stable.
More later, but just wanted to say THANKS for the references, and let you know I watched the video part way through early, and will watch the entire thing and study TED more today, a WEEKEND ...

Dear Gary
This is fantastic ...
A couple of years back I met Dr. Muhammad Yunus when he was passing through New York. In his book 'A World Without Poverty, Social Business and the Future of Capitalism' he talks about the need for a better system of metrics ... something that goes beyond money profit reporting and includes value. I was able to tell him that this is what I was working on, and this is now Community Analytics (CA).
Every engineer knows that you cannot make the impossible out of nothing ... but having seen a lot of refugees through my career, I now argue that the human spirit is a powerful force ... and that the most important asset on the planet are the people. If people are a liability (as they are when GDP is divided by number of people to get per capita GDP) then I argue that leadership is doing something dreadfully wrong. What a waste to have 10% of the US population unemployed when there are a zillion things that need doing. I can go on ...
My goal is to design and deploy a system of socio-economic metrics that is value centric ... and community centric. It should have the rigor of accounting, but not be constraining, but liberating. There are some accounting 'tricks' that make this possible. There is also 21st century technology that makes it possible to do amazing things.
I am building on two ideas (1) what gets measured gets done, and (2) the way you score the game determines how the game is played. If ALL the metrics being talked about are profits, stock market prices, GDP growth ... then there will never be the sort of sustainable global economy that we want.
TED ... TEDx ... are pretty bright people having an opportunity to present and landing in a well trafficked website of TED videos. They have all sorts of interesting ideas ... some related to my agenda, many not. But the TEDxNY group is taking an interest in what I am trying to do, and I have no idea where it may end up!
Have to run ... but it is great learning about you. And thanks for the book pointer!

Hi Peter,

A book hits the bookstores this week, on an Oklahoma family, but Also about “gary and Linda miner” and how they made the impossible happen for this Oklahoma family … here’s the link to that [I had read the manuscript prior to publication, and read the entire book on my flight home form LAX on Sunday …. ANYWAY: so far, not having time yet to study the TED and TEDX web pages, I get the impression that the goal is to “help people in 3rd world countries ‘learn how to fish for themselves”, and not just give aid ? Have I got the gist of it? Or is it much more complex?
Have a good day …… I’m still somewhat behind, but almost caught up …
I’m CCing to my wife, Dr. Linda Miner, laminar@gmail.com, so she is in the chain of command [she and I are so busy, we ourselves rarely have time to duscuss all that is going on …. We are “too tired at night””, having served “too many people during the day”, that we “turn off” and read, play the piano, or just “vegetate” in front of TV to recover , most of the time …

Dear Gary
Fully understand.
TED ... Technology, Entertainment Design ... started as a single annual meeting in Monterey CA about 10 years ago and now has other meetings TED Global in various other places around the world. Short presentations by inspirational people ... 18 minutes ... and the video is then accessible on the web at www.ted.com
TEDx are independently operated little spin-offs that, in our case, watch a video and then talk about it for about an hour ... and plan things! About 20 people (15 to 40 it has been) once a week for an hour. Our group is TEDxNY in New York. The use of the TEDx name is controlled by the TED organization.
I will get you some links ... but cannot do it now. I have to go to a meeting! Sorry!
Peter

Hi Peter,
I'm extremely swamped, having just been away on a business trip for statsoft for 10 days, now catching up on all the emails [still 6 days behind in that ...], and preparing to be gone Sun Feb 14 through that Friday for another business trip. PLUS writing a second book; So I've got to get my work done before I have time to talk on the phone .... BUT if you could give me the full names / understanding of the CODE LETTERS you are using below, TEDx movement, etc .... especially some Web page links, so I can study during a free moment, I'd appreciate it.
Here's the link to my current book:

Dear Steve
Thank you for this introduction. Gary should feel free to contact me when it suits him. I am at 212 744 6469 as you know.
Do you know the TEDx movement ... an offshoot of TED. I go to the TEDxNY meetings and introduced Community Analytics (CA) for Haiti this morning and got a very warm reception. Some of the people know a lot more about technology and communication (as in media, PR, advertising, etc) than I ever will ... and they seemed to 'get it' that value is worth having in the accountability equation, especially when the goal is accountability for the resources flowing into Haiti!
I am on track to go to the next CrisisCommons meeting in New York next Saturday and will do what I can to be ready for it. Look forward to talking to Gary!

Dear Dan
This gives you some idea of the way things are evolving. There is a lot more going on now than in the past, and with luck it will come to something. Do you have any friends in very high places? Specifically how to become a subcontractor to President Bill Clinton in his role as UN Special Envoy to Haiti!
