Some go back many decades, others have been implemented since the Great Recession started in 2007. They all aim to address the core problems that exist with money in the modern economy that inhibits economic progress more than it facilitates progress. Complementary currencies go under many names: alternative currency, community currency, mutual credit, TimeBank, LETS (Local Exchange Trading System), etc. Two well known systems in the NorthEast of the USA are Berkshares and Ithaca Hours. If you would like to know more please contact me (see above). There are several new initiatives developing in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. It is not yet clear which of the platforms will be most suitable for 2013 and beyond ... but it is clear that the limitations of national money whether it is the US dollar or the European Euro are constraining economic progress and doing serious damage to society. The importance of an initiative to establish a complementary currency at the community level is that it goes towards breaking the unhealthy monopoly control that big banks have over money, and puts the power of the purse back where it belongs ... with the people and businesses that make up the community. Money is power ... let's have our own! |
