Invitation to panel discussion on
Abstract: The economy has been dominated by a terrible trio of metrics for many decades. The terrible trio are: (1) money profit for the business owners; (2) stock prices in capital markets for investors; and (3) GDP growth as an indicator of economic health. These measures encourage decision making that suited the shortage economy of years past, but do not suit the highly productive surplus economy of the 21st century. More meaningful metrics are needed for a smart society that needs to solve the problems of aging populations, population explosion, youth joblessness, global trade imbalances, bottom of the pyramid poverty, hunger, shelter, health, education, etc. water shortage, energy shortage, climate change and carbon pollution, waste, security and so on. Many initiatives exist to improve accounting and accountability and the reporting of impact. So far none has anything like the power and reach of the prevailing terrible trio that dominate the metrics of the modern economy and society.
