Cambridge in America invites you and your guest to enjoy an evening drinks reception and dinner with Corpus Christi Master Stuart Laing, who will give a brief talk on economic and social issues in the Gulf entitled Slavery in the Gulf: have the chains been buried? The drinks reception will start at 6:00pm. A no-host dinner will follow (location TBD). Both are open to all Cambridge alumni. Stuart Laing has served as Master at Corpus Christi since 2008, after a first career in the British diplomatic service. Having read Classics at Cambridge, he then studied Arabic language in Lebanon, and specialized in Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, serving in Saudi Arabia and Cairo, before becoming Deputy Ambassador in Prague and Riyadh. He was then appointed High Commissioner to Brunei (1998-2002), Ambassador to Muscat (2002-2005), and Ambassador to Kuwait (2005-2008). Mr. Laing has published, jointly with Mr. Robert Alston, Unshook Till the End of Time, on the history of relations between Britain and Oman.
