Unlimited digital access: £49 a year, cancel anytime | Crossword Health Secretary's concern at prolonged lockdowns

Sajid Javid is to push for lockdown to end 'as soon as possible' over fears of the cost of shutting down the economy. The new Health Secretary, who replaced Matt Hancock after he was forced to resign for breaking lockdown rules to conduct an affair with an aide, said it was his 'most immediate priority to see that we can return to normal as soon and as quickly as possible'. Ministers are considering if it is safe to lift the final Covid restrictions on July 19 - or even earlier - after the Government's roadmap was pushed back by four weeks earlier this month. 'He's a real lockdown sceptic,' said a well-placed source of Mr Javid. 'The tilt in the Cabinet has just shifted quite considerably.' Mr Javid is set to make his Commons debut as Health Secretary this afternoon, when he will update MPs on when the remaining restrictions will be lifted. Associate Editor Camilla Tominey explains where he stands on the key issues.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Mr Hancock resigned after being told that 80 Tory MPs had complained to the whips' office that he had not quit after breaching social distancing rules with his mistress, Gina Coladangelo, in his office. It has also been revealed that he took her as his aide to a G7 conference three weeks ago. But Sarah Vine, Michael Gove's wife, spoke about the difficulties of sustaining a political marriage in the wake of revelations about Mr Hancock's affair.

Military chiefs isolating as top general catches Covid

The Defence Secretary and Britain's six most senior military commanders are all self-isolating after the head of the Armed Forces tested positive for Covid. NHS Test and Trace has since ordered Ben Wallace and the heads of the Royal Navy, RAF and Strategic Command to stay at home for the same duration. Defence sources told Deputy Political Editor Lucy Fisher they had come into 'close contact' with the general at a meeting.
