THE UKRAINE WAR
GLOBAL ECONOMIC REPERCUSSIONS

Egypt looks like one of the biggest losers, and Saudi Arabia the biggest economic winner.

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
This table suggests that it is Egypt that will be the most impacted by the Ukraine War. This is a big concern because Egypt has a fragile society and there is little reserve of political goodwill. The Egyptian administration uses violence to control civil society rather than rational argument and good policy options.

Turkey is also being impacted, but to the extent that Turkey seems to be positively involved with the war, there is likely to be a growing goodwill towards Turkey, something that did not arise in connection with the war in Syria.

This table suggests that Saudi Arabia is going to be a big economic beneficiary of the war in Ukraine. Whether that will translate into a better society in Saudi Arabia is still an open question.
