Some of the news was based on facts seen by hournalists, and much simply originated in the propaganda apparatus of the warring factions. This problem was substantial in WWII, and continued through the Korean War and on through the Vietnam War and continues. I some ways it is worse now than it was in the past. The ability of almost anyone to take images using a cell phone and distribute them instantly gives an opportunity to address the 'fog of war' but the speed and volume of this material means that it is possible to create the appearance of reality without there being any reality. My conclusion is that there is huge amount of 'spin' emerging from the various actors in the Ukraine War. The mainstream media information flows have to be complicit in this, otherwise their breaking news will be hopelessly out of date. I have started to identify images that are being replicated over and over again because they are good images with 'shock value' but not really in support of the story that is being told. In the modern digital communications ecosystem, this is easy to get 'stock' images to support almost any story. I am trying to be careful ... but probably missing a lot. Peter Burgess | ||
