Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
The Land-Rover and the Range-Rover were impressive vehicles that served a very useful purpose for many years.

My schoolboy friend and flat mate in London in the early 1960s bought an ex-WD (War Department) Land Rover in 1964 and set off to drive from London to South Africa. I think the vehicle was 15 years old when he bought it, but it still had a fighting chance of making this onerous journey. In fact, it did not make it, but it got as far as Salisbury, Rhodesia (soon to be Harare, Zimbabwe) before it finally was not worth repairing.

I did a fair amount of consulting work in Africa, and got to use Land Rovers in many different onerous conditions. The Toyota Land Cruiser was more popular when I was working in Africa, but it was generally recognized that the Land Rover was a whole lot stronger and was very difficult to break. On one assignment, we were using five Toyotas and one Land Rover to travel around the Ogaden of Ethiopia. Every one of the Toyotas broke something critical ... but the Land Rover broke nothing. The Toyotas were a lot more comfortable than the Land Rover until they got stuck.

I am not quite sure what this modern Range Rover built in France is carrying forward from the history of the marque ... it seems to be more of an indulgence than anything else ... something I cannot afford, and at this point in my life do not need !!!!!!!!!!!

The new 2022 Range Rover has just gone on sale and I spent a few days with one to see what it's like to live with and how it compares to our 2021 Range Rover. Here's what I found out.. This video was created with the support of:
