Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5EONrYaWCU Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I was in mid-career when I learned something about Finland and its 20th century history. In the early 1990s I did some work for UNDP in connection with the newly won independence of Namibia ... formerly South West Africa ... which had been enabled in large part by the United Nations Transitional Assistance Group (UNTAG) in Namibia headed up by Martti Ahtisaari, a prominent Finn, who subsequently became President of Finland and also was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. During colonial times, South West Africa was one of the very few places where Finland had a colonial presence. Martti Ahtisaari must be given considerable credit for the success of Namibia's independence process in the face of all sorts of obstacles. My own enthusiasm for Namibia's independence process was informed in part by the idea that success in Namibia might result in anti-apartheid progress in South Africa, while failure in Namibia would stop that sort of progress in its tracks. I was part of the team headed up by UNDP Resident Representative David McAdams (an American) that took over from UNTAG at the moment of independence. One of my immediate collaborators (Pekka Korpinen) was another Finn who was quite high profile and well respected in Finland. Together, a UN organized funding conference for Namibia in New York less than 6 months after independence became one of the most successful initiatives of its type in the history of the UN. During the 20th century, Finland had important confrontations with Russia and the Soviet Union ... and prevailed.
