TRAIN JOURNEYS
DENVER, COLORADO TO NOAB, UTAH 2 DAYS on Rocky Mountaineer's LUXURY TRAIN 'Rockies to Red Rocks' Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b-cecHEfdU Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I travelled across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver on the Canadian National in 1966 during February. It was a truly memorable journey. A few years before in 1960 I had travelled from Montreal to the West Coast by car. Myself and another student delivered a used Cadillac de Ville from a dealer in Montreal to another dealer in Edmonton, Alberta. We had to pay for the gas which at that time was around 20 cents a gallon. We did the road trip in around two and a half days taking turns driving and practically no stops. We were advised to take a route South of Lake Superior through the USA rather than staying in Canada because there was some 200 miles of gravel road North of the Lake ... the Trans Canada highway was still a long way from being complete. The train journey in 1966 was quite memorable. I remember getting out of the train in Regina, Saskatchewan or possibly Winnipeg, Manitoba and getting shouted at by the conductor because of his concern that I would get frost bite in just a few minutes ... it was minus 60 fahrenheit! About a day later the train stalled out in the Rockies going through the Jasper National Park. This was in part because of the low temperatures and it was about 24 hours before more locomotives arrived to help us out. The scenery was spectacular. The modern high speed express passenger train is my preferred means of travel ... it is so much more interesting than a typical airline flight !!!!!!!!! Peter Burgess | ||
