JEFFREY SACHS AND ROB JOHNSON New Economic Thinking ... America Vs. Everyone Discussion between Jeffrey Sachs and Rob Johnson Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-tDj4ZGcZY Peter Burgess COMMENTARY In some ways, conversations like this are very frustrating. Both these men are well educated and have vast experience ... but it is not at all clear how their depth of knowledge can be used in a meaningful way to do things that will make a difference. My personal interest and goal is how to move from 'talk' to 'walk' in all the ways that are needed to make the world a better place. This is not so much about getting the economic theory right, but to get everything that matters right so that the desired goals are achieved. I think of management as the art of getting the best possible results as fast as possible but not just for 'me' but for everyone ... and for this I see the need for a rather different framework of management metrics ... a framework that I am working to develop My goal is to develop TrueValueMetrics.org so that social (people), environmental (planet) and economic (profit) progress can be accelerated in a way that gets good results for everyone and everything. The starting point is conventional financial profit performance, but then incorporating things that matter for society and things that matter for the environment. To some extent, business should not have its goal as the increase in the economic (financial) value of the business, but should be more a tool that improves society and improves the environment. This is not the mechanism that has become the norm during the past several decades ... though the ideas have existed for a long time going back to the beginning of the industrial revolution in the 19th century. The foundation for massive social and environmental progress is technologically feasible, but rather little of corporate activity is going in this direction, rather corporate activity generally serves to concentrate financial wealth while doing the minimum for society and the environment. Fortunately this is changing ... but the metrics to account for comprehensive progress remain primitive. This needs to change, but it is not easy. Peter Burgess | ||
