LONDON UNDERGROUND B1M: Inside London's £19BN New Railway (and its Nightmare Station) Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S3J1d9BpUo Peter Burgess COMMENTARY This is a pretty impressive project both in scale and complexity ... and the fact that it has taken longer to complete than was planned, and has cost quite a lot more than was originally estimated is not at all surprising. In its totality the Elizabeth Line project looks like it is going to be a massive success ... and that deserves celebration. I am perhaps a little more foregiving than most when it comes to complex engineering, and especially perhaps in this case. Barry Hook was one of my best friends at Cambridge University. We were both studying engineering and sailed together for a number of years after college. His father was project manager for one of the prime contractors on the Victoria Line that was built during the 1960s, and I can relate somewhat to the incredible engineering that was involved in the Elizabeth Line project. Whenever I have the opportunity to get close to modern engineering, I am reminded how much engineering has progressed in the last several decades, and how little the institutions of government have progressed, and also how the economic goals of the business and financial community are the same old same old which might have been right for the 1960s but less so 60 years later !!!!
