NORTH KOREA
HISTORY Casual Scholar video ... How North Korea Became So Insanely Poor Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJKNwhhOTV8 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY Management Matters! The decisions that are made over time make a huge difference. Leadership is important. This video is very thought provoking. During all my adult lifetime ... I was born in 1940 and became somewhat aware of world affairs during the Korean War ... I have seen North Korea as a poor 'defeated nation' struggling to feed its people and make a name for itself under a nasty Communist regime hell-bent on building and deploying nuclear weapons. The brief history that includes environmental degradation as a driver of economic catastrophe is something that I have not previously associated with North Korea. Nor was I aware of the high level of industrialization that has existed in North Korea for a very long time ... and more important, still exists today. While the industrial base is way stronger today than I realized, it is only functioning because of external life support from outside the country, like China, and in the interest of these various supporters rather than the people and regime of North Korea. This is a great video that I need to watch again. Peter Burgess | ||

In fact for a brief moment in time it was the most industrialized nation in Asia and persistently outperformed South Korea for decades. How did not North Korea go from the “Idea socialist state” to the worst place to live in the world?
