TRUST
A SERIOUS CRISIS OF TRUST 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer Launch Live from the World Economic Forum Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY1VDIDwlcw&t=113s Peter Burgess COMMENTARY This was a lot more interesting than I expected. The opening by Richard Edelman was very thought provoking and then followed up by a very good panel of key practitioners with impressive track records. Some of the trends described were somewhat different from what I had expected and I have had to rethink some of my conclusions about the 'state' of the world and its direction. My revised conclusions embrace the idea that an average or a total is likely to give a false impression unless the data reflect a 'normal' distribution if information. Increasingly, the data seems to have multiple 'humps' reflecting the multiple degrees of polarization in the group being studied. The idea that companies have become the most trusted is interesting and in some ways unbelievable. It only becomes believable when the 'bad actors' are grouped together and the 'good actors' are grouped together and the mix evaluated. Some of the very big bad actors are moving very slowly to improve their key issue behavior while a growing number of the smaller good actors are accelerating. Getting the big bad actors to move faster may be happening but the pace is modest, to say the least! In the discussion, I was pleased to hear a lot about ALL the actors in the system doing a lot more to cooperate where they have the relevant expertise. In my view this to happen both with respect to both the activities needed as well as the financing. I do not recall much commentary about the risks we need to face, and the glacial pace that the world's key actors are moving to address these risks ... but that was really not part of this forum's agenda.
