Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I remember something of my impressions of the United States as a 20 year old visitor from the UK in 1960. In the UK there was a social division between the Upper Class, the Middle Class and the Working Class. This was deep at the time in the 1960s and had been so for generations before that. In the USA my impression was the 'racism' was something similar. I think I was right to some extent ... but over time I have learned that while there are some similarities, there is a very different history and underlying causalities.

I grew up in England. From the age of 5 I lived with my parents in Okehampton, a small town of about 4,000 people in Devon in the West of England. Looking back, I lived in a very protected small 'bubble' but within this bubble I had complete freedom to explore. We had a big garden which on one side had an open border with a undeveloped wood and then access to the town park. A cart track on the other side of the garden was a pathway that eventually gave access to Dartmoor.

I think I was about 10 years old and two of us were allowed to go off to explore this pathway and get on to the moor. This was exciting, and must have induced some trepidation on the part of my parents because the moor was famous for its bogs where one could sink deep into the mud. Anyway ... we survived ... and I have remained interested in 'pushing the envelope' every since!

Over the years, I think parenting and growing up has changed ... with the elders taking not enough interest in the way this change has been taking place.

The fact that 'racism' is not long gone is disappointing and tragic. I am somewhat of the opinion that some of the cause is the ongoing problem of 'silos'. There are people who know a lot about how to solve problems of all types buth they work and live in silos and what they know circulates only in their one silo even when it is needed in all the other silos. As knowledge in total has increased and is way deeper in 2023 than it was in 1965 when I 'completed' my formal education ... because of silos most people have no idea what is known outside there own little world.

The Rachel Maddow reporting here reflects a tragic failure to progress on the part of the society in much of the United States. It is a sad state of affairs, and not changing very fast in the way it needs to!
