ACTORS
PEOPLE ARE CONSUMERS
Food
Food is essential for life. It is a sad reality that many people around the world are short of food while others eat too much for their health. The global food system is highly productive but not particularly fit-for-purpose where the purpose os to feed the population of the whole world in the most effective way.
Housing
Housing ... shelter is a basic esssential. In many parts of the world the concept of 'afforable housing' cannot happen because the cost of decent housing is too high to be afforable for anyone other than those with high wealth and/or income.
Clothes
Clothes are basic. The mass production of clothes is a huge industry but there is massive waste in the way the industry operates with serious negative impacts on both society and the environment.
Mobility
Mobility ... transport ... the ability to move around is very important. The technology has improved significantly over the years, but the trends have resulted in higher costs as private vehicles have taken over from public transport.
Recreation
Recreation is of critical importance especially for young people. Recreation for young people should be fun. It can be competitive but within reasonable limits. Many of the activities within recreation also are important learning opportunities for young people, and are opportunities to learn teamwork and leadership.
Consumers as Customers
People have needs that have to be supplied. The consumer then becomes a customer, and it is customers that deliver revenue to business in exchange for goods and services.
In the modern world there has been much analysis of business strategy to optimise the delivery of maximum profit for the business, but much less rigorous analysis of what it takes to deliver the maximum of value to the customer and consumer.
Overview
More consumption correlates to a better quality of life up to a certain level. Beyond that level more consumption may well have negative consequences, as for example too much food may result in obesity and diabetes or worse.
