Burgess COMMENTARY
This is the message I have sent to Sulin Lau:

Dear Sulin

Do you, by any chance, know the work of Durreen Shahnaz who is currently based in Singapore. She has a very interesting background and is now (1) teaching at the University in Singapore and (2) establishing a Social Business Stock Exchange in Singapore.

My hope is that the work I am doing with TrueValueMetrics can be helpful in establishing a data foundation for the social business sector. What I call the terrible trio of (1) money profit for business (2) stock prices in capital markets for investors and (3) GDP growth for economic health have done incredible damage to the global economy and society over the past 50 years, and will do more damage unless something else is added into the mix. Surely what we ought to be doing is using available resources to improve quality of life, both now and into the future, but quality of life, sustainability, etc are not easy to quantify, but that should not be allowed to get in the way.

I am not sure how to do this, but I want to see every person with a mobile phone feeding into a system that records something about all the economic activity that is going on ... with aggregation into the implementing organization AND THE SAME DATA aggregating into the community. There is accounting data for money profit reporting and performance data in every organization, but almost nothing about social valuadd ... or value destruction that impacts the community, society, the planet!

I am living mainly in Pennsylvania, but come to Manhatten for interesting events (like last Thursday). You sound like you are enormously busy ... but I would very much like to share some thoughts with you if this is possible.

But really, that's a white lie. The truth is I don't love either of those titles because what I love most about my work are all the things that hide in the footnotes of most jobs. I love advertising, information networks, digitization, brands and insights, of course. But I also love semiotics, narratives, measurement and monetization; process reinvention. Most of all, I love finding stories hidden in the corners of newspapers, or buried in a coal mine of forgotten data.
