The political and governance segment of the global economy is a big problem, and a big part of the cause of economic dysfunction.
It is in politics and governance that one finds the largest part of global corruption. Corruption is, however, only the tip of the iceburg. The value chain enabled by corruption does untold damage to people, place and planet while often being a source of immense profit for those controlling political and economic power.
In the US Government, there are many Inspectors General, and there is an office called the Goverment Accountability Office (GAO). The performance of these people and this office may be characterized as 'too little and too late'. If I was the CFO of the US Government, I would want to implement better accounting that was both timely, relevant and also independent.
It is entirely possible to have accountability in all aspects of society and the economy, but it is never going to come from the top of the structure, because this is where the benefits are realized.

On Government Financial Management
My experience includes a period of several years in the 1990s when I worked on a series of projects concerned with Government Financial Management in developing countries, in the former Soviet Union and in major OECD countries. As a former corporate CFO I was appalled at the state of government financial management, and the issues arising. Has anything changed?
