Burgess COMMENTARY

Gmail Peter Burgess A New Systems Ruth Ann Barrett Thu, Feb 20, 2014 at 2:27 PM To: peterbnyc@gmail.com Dear Peter, Thanks for sending on a more detailed explanation of MDIA and after reading my comment I was unnecessarily harsh I think. I sit in a rather unusual seat of aggregating and curating hundreds and hundreds of thought leaders on the subject of sustainability from all the “Isms” and “Ists” and disciplines and professions and I am sure the accounting profession needs more people rethinking the process. What I hear, though, is that the profession is not. The accountants are not calling their CFO’s and CEO’s on the ghastly practice of externalizing costs. In that regard I did two interviews that I hope you have a few minute to listen to. One is John Fullerton of the Capital Institute and the other is Aussie Larry O’Connor who is getting his Ph.D in accounting and really is someone you maybe want to connect with. If you are interested I have his email. There are others in the special collection, Transforming Our Economy, that I think you will find are members of your tribe. Jeffrey Hollender, found of the consumer products company, Seventh Generation and a “filmmaker” you might find inspiring as he talks about his film, How to Boil A Frog by Jon Cooksey and offers advice you may find useful. The point is that whether you a focusing on producing a film or a system, it is necessary to have the connections and funding to move it out of the personal into the public, the marketplace. I thought you were being unnecessarily critical of the Plastic Oceans film project, which is being well funded, has access to key decision movers, and, a marketing plan. While important, I was assuming your work is not backed by a marketing plan (reference to an 'accounting space') which would provide you the opportunity to express what the metrics will be to measure your success. Here I could be wrong as I am basing my assumption on recent experiences with the whole systems guys who come out of information system technology and were clueless as to what is needed to move an idea out of the garage and into the public realm. Accountants like the IT folks - in my experience working based on working in corporations for more than a couple of years - have been mostly individual contributors who spend way too much time in the back room. If you are going to change the system, like many of documentary filmmakers* it may in the end be more important to network and collaborate than invent. On the other hand, the database folks like myself, making “lists” early in the automation cycle, now creating search engines and apps, are all about connections and collaboration and metrics including the mystical ROI. When you do a video interview about MDIA and post it to YouTube let me know and I will add to our special collection and put it out on social media to help build awareness. Ruth Ann P.S. we have a considerable number of trailers on EarthSayers.tv which you can see a list of if you search on ‘trailer’.
