Fabrizio Cometto MIPP candidate at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) When it comes to Impact investing, we often think of 'traditional' social enterprise providing access to finance (MFIs) or products and services along the 'Water-Energy-Food nexus' for BOP customers. But BOP customers might also need CREATIVITY! Check this interesting interview between Jacqueline Novogratz (Acumen founder) and Jocelyn Wyatt, co-lead of Ideo.org http://www.fastcodesign.com/3018657/design-50/dynamic-duos-acumen-funds-jacqueline-novogratz-and-ideoorgs-jocelyn-wyatt-on-pover Like Comment (3) Follow Reply Privately22 hours ago Comments 3 comments Fabrizio Cometto Fabrizio Fabrizio Cometto MIPP candidate at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) 'It's possible' should be more a 'Is it possible?' And should that be a priority? Waiting for your comments.... Since we are living on a planet in peril there should, also in my even more profound and experienced opinion, ONLY be projects clearly combining in efforts to build profit in areas of our planet where it is most essential economical tools are inserted into the market. I cannot think of any other place on earth better than within the rainforest and tropical forest areas, being the lungs of this planet as it is they who controls the weather patterns (tropical storms, hurricanes and tornadoes) in high degree. Without calculating the value of all the millions living in these countries, not the value of their biodiversity or income from leisure and tourism, not the total value of these countries agriculture and marine production, and even so they still hold commodity values for over USD 300.000.000.000.000.000.000 as well is it the home of 1.600.000.000 poor people. So where could you place any of your own money, investments, commodity futures, Impact Investments or business development plans showing lower risk, higher and sustainability based ROI with direct and indirect huge measurable impacts on social life and our nature? The difference of this planets own economy, producing abundance and by that deliver sustainability and “profit” to every man living on this planet, man avoided to adapt to this simple economy paradigm and invented its own linear wealth economy paradigm based on scarcity instead. The man made paradigm does not deliver abundance, only profit for wealth development, as so it is not sustainable for the majority of men living on this planet and not the planet it selves. The linear loan based economy has failed time after time and created damages and sufferings to millions on this planet and is therefore an extremely high risk platform to invest any of your hard earned money on. While the natures own cyclic and circular economy delivering abundance has not failed man once out of natural reasons. Only when it was disturbed by mans brutal, non sustainable and non ethically attacks on this planet resources similar to earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions or hit by meteors from outer space as it was 66million years a ago when 85% of all species was eradicated for good. So yes it is absolutely possible to achieve extremely good profits from low risk projects, as usual delivering profits into a capitalistically system adapting to a much needed change in paradigms to achieve sustainability in our world economy. No longer will capitalists in breach of natures own sustainability norms be accepted and they need to adapt rapidly if not done already to the seriously negative situation our planet is in and all their actions must be ethically acceptable. Breaches on such demands should be treated as a crime to man, equally as to war, to murder, to abuse or rape, to violence, to human trafficking, to drug trafficking and to all and every serious attack on the humanity maybe? Being it directly or indirectly responsible for an economical transaction and there must be a Zero tolerance attitude from this planets total society on these factors shall we all prevail and succeed in saving this planet, in my opinion. Fabrizio, I hope you can use my comments in your future work as a professional and I would be happy to elaborate with you further as well will I welcome inquiries for profitable projects in our most important rainforest, the Amazon. Thank you Asle Like Reply privately Flag as inappropriate 3 hours ago Fabrizio Cometto Fabrizio Fabrizio Cometto MIPP candidate at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Asle, thanks for your comment! My intention was not at all to doubt the necessity of environmental sustainable projects and I do share with you the strong belief that we need to protect our most essential natural assets as we have only ONE earth! In fact, I am a strong believer in social enterprises which might not only have a double bottom line (financial and social) but if possible a triple bottom line (financial, social and ENVIRONMENTAL!). Having said so, my travels and observations of what is happening in many developing countries, has brought me to believe that it might be difficult to raise environmental conscience within populations which haven't reached a threshold of minimal material well-being...but this is anyway another discussion and I understand your comment regarding the 'change of paradigm'. Actually, my post was originally sent to comment on the need and the possibility for social enterprises catering BOP customers to offer products which not only might suit the local needs in a cost-efficient and adequate way but which might also take into account product design, packaging and visual creativity. Whatever other comments on this topic are welcomed! Like Reply privately Flag as inappropriate 2 hours ago |
