Key Conversations Balle - featured At BALLE 2014 we will explore together the challenges, emerging trends, opportunities and ways to rebuild our economic system in six critical areas: Finance for Resilient Local Economies; Ecosystems for Community Entrepreneurship; Leadership Development for a New Economy; a Localist Policy Agenda; the New Food Economy; and the Future of Ownership. Localist leaders from each of these sectors will come together to advance their work in these conversations. Super Sessions include vision speakers, presenters, case studies and respondants, and a deep bench of facilitators and leaders in the room. Read on and explore the details and luminaries of each Super Session: Financing Resilient Local Economies A growing number of investors and lenders are considering local options. With a new generation of local financial institutions and supportive public policies, literally trillions of dollars could move from Wall Street to Main Street, creating millions of new jobs and helping to build vibrant local economies. What are the most promising new models to connect local businesses with local lenders, investors, and donors to speed and scale entrepreneurial impact? How can place-based impact investing coupled with philanthropy transform communities? Engage with the pioneers who are taking socially responsible investment from 1.0 to 2.0. Speakers and leaders of Financing Resilient Local Economies Ecosystems for Community Entrepreneurs “If you examine the scholarly research on what makes entrepreneurship and innovation thrive – whether in Silicon Valley, Santiago, or anywhere else – the conclusions are strikingly consistent. Innovation is not a solo sport. It thrives in supportive, diverse, connected, pay-it-forward ecosystems.” ~ Forbes. Community entrepreneurship with its commitment to place-based supply chains, opportunity, and environmental innovation, is contributing solutions to many economic, social and environmental challenges. But how is operating this kind of enterprise different than running a traditional business? What are the unique challenges these entrepreneurs face? What cross-sector coordination can strengthen the ecosystem for these entrepreneurs to thrive in your community? How can nonprofits, governments, businesses, and the public be brought together to create collective impact for thriving community entrepreneurship? Speakers and leaders of Ecosystems for Community Entrepreneurs Leadership Development for a New Economy As Albert Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them,” and we definitely can’t build a new economy without tapping into a deeper level of our humanity, of who we really are, and who we want to be as a society. We are living in uncertain times, but one truth has emerged as an organizing principle for this era: interdependence. We are all in this together. New systems conditions require new leadership capacities -- and this is a shift that revolves around an awakening of the heart of the entrepreneur. Join this conversation between scientists who are uncovering the surprising truth about what really makes us happy, the businesses who are putting individual transformation at the center of their mission, and investors who are investing in the cultivation of business leaders’ hearts. Speakers and leaders of Leadership Development for a New Economy A Localist Policy Agenda Sometimes it isn’t enough to change the way you play. Sometimes you have to change the game itself, and the Localist movement is re-writing the rules that govern economic systems from the grassroots up. By drafting, advocating for, and implementing policy, innovators are transforming the legal structures that undergird the economy. Truly deep economic evolution requires political and legal change, and this conversation requires a broad cross-section of entrepreneurs, policymakers, economic development professionals, and community members to create a framework of new rules for a new game. Speakers and leaders of a Localist Policy Agenda The New Food Economy: Soil, Systems, Society Local food, farmers markets, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) have started to go mainstream, and yet the food system still needs a lot of work to support healthy economies and communities. Facing the complex puzzles of economic justice, food security, conventional distribution networks, economies of scale, and so many other tall hurdles, Localists are taking food economy work to the next level. From the creation of food hubs aggregating agricultural products to the transformation of urban corner stores, local food producers and advocates are pulling out all the stops to create a new food economy. Join in this collaborative conversation about creating the next generation of local food systems work. Speakers and leaders of the New Food Economy The Future of Ownership One of the core values of the Localist movement is that ‘Ownership Matters’ and we firmly believe that creating greater community-level ownership opportunities is a critical element in cultivating Prosperity for All. With worker-owned co-ops, union co-ops, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP), and other structures for creating community wealth and workplace democracy, the movement for the expansion of ownership opportunities is rapidly gaining steam. This conversation will convene leaders from across the continent to advance the integration of ownership democratization and Localist goals of healthy and sustainable local economies.
