Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition

Burgess COMMENTARY

Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition

The Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition brings together leaders from government, business, and civil society to share experiences and best practices in carbon pricing. By bringing diverse public and private sector backgrounds together, the coalition will help expand and improve the design and implementation of carbon pricing policies that can maintain competitiveness, create jobs, encourage innovation, and deliver meaningful emissions reductions.

The coalition will convene high-level meetings and create an analytical foundation that includes future carbon price scenarios and best practice principles for pricing carbon. Its work will complement that of the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR), which provides technical assistance to create building blocks for carbon markets, and the Networked Carbon Markets Initiative, which facilitates linking or networking of different carbon markets to deliver effective climate finance.

The coalition’s work includes:

• Advancing carbon pricing: The coalition will build from the PMR’s work to help countries, sub-national governments and cities to increase political and business support for carbon pricing. It will help contribute to the design of effective carbon pricing systems that maintain competitiveness, create jobs, encourage innovation, and deliver meaningful emissions reductions.

• Defining the business case for carbon pricing: While many companies already incorporate climate risk and resilience into their business plans, there is a lot of uncertainty about how carbon pricing will unfold globally. Coalition members will engage with business, academic, and government experts to map out future carbon pricing scenarios and develop principles for carbon pricing to help maintain competitiveness, provide incentives for clean-tech investment, increase support for renewable energy and energy efficiency, and link diverse national and sub-national carbon pricing systems.

• High-level dialogue: The coalition will convene a series of high-level dialogues with finance ministers, investors, corporate leaders, civil society groups, and experts during 2015. Key events will include meetings at the World Economic Forum’s Annual and Regional Meetings, Carbon Expo, the G7/G20, and the IMF/World Bank Group Spring and Annual Meetings.

The coalition was created in 2014 by the World Bank Group in conjunction with partners including the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Economic Forum, and the United Nations Global Compact’s Caring for Climate Initiative. For more information, contact nprytz@worldbank.org.
