Dear Tim, Peter and Chris,

This website is very cool. The documents I have seen so far were posted by Gregory Wendt, who is on the Board of Advisors for SeaWave Battery, Inc., and a really good guy. All were inspiring; the one I'm reading now goes beyond that.

https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/seuk_british_council_think_global_report.pdf

This document discusses how to remedy the failures of implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, and I very much like its perspective and approach. I recommend reading it with an eye to the opportunities it suggests. If you don't have time to read 30 pages, skip to sheet 12 of 15 (pages 23-24) and see how many potential opportunities you can spot! Opportunities, if you read between the lines, for:

  • 1) the GIS knowledgebase,

  • 2) real economic benefit tracking (community accountancy),

  • 3) computer based patient records, outcomes research & a health care knowledgebase,

  • 4) energy efficiency, renewable energy, battery storage, EVs, integrated farming & waste management, arborculture, Captive Columns paired with the natural building movement, and many other physical solutions to challenges we face today.

What I'm seeing is that many of the organizations quoted, while not yet in the seats of ultimate power, have sufficient resources and authority to be able to work together and support our work, which is well-positioned to support, coordinate and leverage exactly what these two pages say. If we can do what we have talked about (mostly in 3 separate, but roughly parallel, intermittent streams of conversation), the economic activity we will unleash will do the rest of the job.

Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

Regards,

Mark

Dear Mark

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone ...

Mark ... thanks for sending me this ... and it certainly reads quite optimistically. However, I am of the opinion that it is easy to talk (write) when there are essentially no metrics to support some of the rather glib and optimistic conclusions described. This report has probably been written to help justify the work of ... that is the funding for ... SEUK and the British Council.

In my experience social enterprises do some wonderful work ... but usually don't survive because their funding dries up. Meanwhile money profit business can grow and grow and grow as long as it has profit to report. In many cases, profit comes from rather dubious business practices, including cosy relationships with the people in power.

I note Muhammad Yunus being quoted. A number of years back when he published his book on Social Business I spent some time with him, but on reflection his leverage in the social business space is rather modest, and his interest in really objective metrics unimportant. Some of the other cases are very interesting ... but tiny relative to what is needed. Governments have no money, and cash rich business is not much interested in the social dimension of anything ... and when it comes to the environment, who cares!

I am hopeful ... but realistic. A growing number of big companies have CEOs who want to behave in a responsible manner. At the same time the CFOs have rules about reporting that are all about profit and compliance, and the reporting of impact on people and planet is clumsy, costly and hardly worth the paper its written on. My work could change this ... but I don't have the intellect and energy to pull it off.

Do you, by any chance, know of the efforts of The Ecological Sequestration Trust (TEST) ... an initiative started by Peter Head formerly of Arup, the international consulting engineering group. I think they are on the right track ... but I don't know how fast they are progressing.

All the best

I hope the Thanksgiving weekend has been good to you

Peter
