Transcript English (Automatic Captions) 0:05as the intelligent bipedal 0:09man has been able over the millennia to use the planet's resources to become the 0:13refined being of today predators having disappeared he has happily x we are now 0:25seven billion human beings and there will be 2 billion more of us in 40 years 0:29time ever increasing a number more and more of us live in cities cities that 0:35are becoming bigger and bigger to live to travel to work and to get as much 0:42comfort as we can every day 0:48anytime of day and night but it comes with a price we can see more and more 0:59goods and services 1:02we produce waste generated pollution we consume natural resources and the 1:11available fresh water we deteriorate the ecosystems and reduce biodiversity we 1:24put more and more pressure on our planet that's our environmental footprint to 1:33control reduce our footprint can we really go back 1:37that's not easy then let's move forwards 1:42how can we make everyone comfortable without destroying our environment 1:46let's have a closer look 1:49products and services can be broken down into several phases the lifecycle steps 1:57extraction and production of raw materials transport and transformation 2:01packaging and distribution consumption or use and end-of-life management and 2:07each step of the lifecycle interacts with the environment resources water 2:12climate and ecosystems this means that each product or service we consume as an 2:18environmental footprint to reduce this footprint we need to act in these four 2:23areas 2:27and to act we need to have quantitative data to understand better 2:36yeah 2:41the carbon footprint takes into account the greenhouse gas emissions 2:46it assesses the contribution of our activities on climate change 2:56the water footprint evaluates the impacts on the availability of fresh 3:00water resources it takes into account the volume the quality and the water 3:05stress 3:08the resources footprint takes into account the reserves of raw materials 3:13fossil energy and mineral resources but also would or agricultural land it 3:18assesses the impact on the availability of resources the ecosystems footprint 3:24evaluates the deterioration of ecosystems and biodiversity it takes 3:28into account pollution released into the environment and the change in land use 3:32assessing the environmental footprint helps make good decisions to reduce the 3:46environmental footprint several scenarios must be evaluated we can 3:51reduce our environmental footprint by rethinking the management of territories 3:55and we can for instance improve the energy performance of buildings to 4:06reduce the consumption in cities and use renewable energy to become less 4:12dependent on fossil resources and emit less greenhouse gas 4:21treating water and managing water more efficiently means reducing our pressure 4:26on water resources and also protecting ecosystems or restoring biodiversity to 4:35ease our daily city life different means of shared transportation offer many 4:39solutions solutions adapted to the local reality and everybody's needs that are 4:48sorting our waste means we need fewer raw materials thanks to recycling and 4:54energy recovery from waste reduces our need for fossil fuel the city of 5:01tomorrow will function according to a logical system maximally integrating 5:05these activities in the future they will become increasingly interdependent and 5:12already the lines between them have blurred here waste becomes energy their 5:18wastewater is turned into bio plastics or heat somewhere else 5:22electricity becomes green 5:25managing our environmental footprint in a world under pressure enables us to 5:30live in a territory that is more resilient healthier more attractive and 5:34more competitive 5:36let's act together to reduce our environmental footprint
