I went up to Sidney in 1958. My Cambridge experience was excellent, but I migrated to Canada in 1966 and then USA in 1967 and completely lost touch with Cambridge. By comparison my American friends who had gone to Harvard were still strongly connected to their alumni network. It was not until quite recently that Cambridge and Sidney got their act together to make the Cambridge alumni network meaningful ... but this network is still only a skeleton of what it really could be.

At my age (76) there is a tendency to look backwards rather than forward, and I regret very much losing touch with Cambridge for about 30 odd years ... but it is both Cambridge and I that are at fault. Cambridge is a wonderful place, but in some ways very narrow in its world view and I would argue only contributing to a better world at around 10% of its potential. That is pretty low,, but an indication of what might be possible with a more global (as opposed to personal and specialist) set of goals. Exciting times are here, but the world is not getting much benefit from the amazing knowledge that has been uncovered.

Dear Mr Burgess,
We would like to invite you to share your thoughts on Cambridge with us. We are keen to learn how you feel about your relationship with Cambridge and to get a better understanding of what you think of the communications, events, benefits and volunteering opportunities we offer you. We would also like to develop deeper insights about how you engage with and support us.
We’re delighted to invite you to share your views in the 2016 Alumni Survey. The survey will take up to 12 minutes and will inform our planning for alumni programming in the years ahead.
The questions asked in this survey complement those asked in the Sidney Sussex College alumni survey which you would have been invited to complete last week.
As an additional incentive for completing the survey, you could win a £750 voucher for Executive Education training at the Cambridge Judge Business School*, a £500 travel voucher from STA Travel, a Cambridge merchandise pack or a book collection featuring well-known alumni authors.
To commence the survey, please click here.
Thank you in advance for participating. Your insights will help us shape how we can better support and inform you, and the Cambridge students and alumni who come after you.
