JUST Capital
Company Justness

Some of the companies that have a high ranking in the JUST Capital analysis process

Burgess COMMENTARY
My impression of the JUST Capital analysis of the corporate sector is that the analysis is essentially circular in character. There is some determination of the company characteristics that are important to investors, and then some analysis of companies based on these characteristics and some weighting of these to reflect the interests of inve3stors. This is interesting, but not very important, but worse, it tends to strengthen the bubble within which investors make their decisions.

'Rockwell Collins' Industry: Aerospace & Defense Cedar Rapids, Iowa When internal research revealed miscommunication between managers and employees, this maker of aviation systems instituted a new bottoms-up evaluation process, and remains focused on improving worker engagement, says CEO Kelly Ortberg. Rockwell Collins also has a 15-person sustainability team that has helped reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by 26% over the past six years, primarily through more efficiently-designed manufacturing facilities, boosting its score for environmental impact. 'Ford Motor' Industry: Automobiles & Components Dearborn, Mich. “Our founder Henry Ford said a business that makes nothing but money is a poor business,” says CEO Mark Fields. The automaker scores well on community engagement, thanks to programs like “Thirty Under 30,” which connects tech-minded millennial employees with nonprofits for a crash course in charity operations and strategy. One initial effort: building a mobile app for the local United Way chapter. “Go Unite” highlights needs for the charity’s various projects, making it easier for donors and volunteers to participate. 'Silicon Valley Bank' Industry: Banks Santa Clara, Calif. Funding tech startups for 33 years turns out to be pretty rewarding, to the tune of a 28% compounded annual return over the last five years. “Our entire history is about financing high growth and innovative companies,” says CEO Greg Becker. “[They] are creating the most jobs and high-paying jobs.” SVB banks nearly half the life sciences firms that went public in 2015 and many venture-backed tech unicorns, including Pinterest and Uber. 'Fluor 'Industry: Capital Goods Irving, Tex. Fluor’s good behavior starts with its employees and expands to the surrounding community. The engineering and construction company has a keen focus on worker safety, having instituted a tracking system and best practices playbook that cut injury rates by 25%, and it donated more than $9.5 million to local programs like the Boys & Girls Club in 2015. 'Legg Mason 'Industry: Capital Markets Baltimore, Md. This asset manager doesn’t just track its investments. Legg Mason closely monitors everything from charitable giving to environmental waste. About 16% of the firm’s $626 billion in long-term assets are allocated to socially responsible investment strategies, and its greenhouse gas emissions are down 77% since 2007. Some firms are cagey about disclosing details on non-financial matters, but that’s nonsense to Legg Mason chief Joseph Sullivan. “We believe making [such disclosures] ultimately contributes to the bottom line,” he says. Eastman Chemical 'Industry: Chemicals Kingsport, Tenn. “We focus on what we call ‘inclusive capitalism,” says CEO Mark Costa. The specialty chemical company actively cultivates a diverse workforce, one of several reasons it receives the highest score in the chemicals industry for worker treatment. Three “Eastman Resource Groups” seek to foster a welcoming environment for underrepresented staff members, including partnerships with the Society for Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers. The company also supports employees serving in the armed forces; while reservists are on active duty, Eastman makes up the difference between normal pay and military pay, plus provides continued benefits. Verisk Analytics Professional%20Services' Industry: Commercial & Professional Services Jersey City, N.J. “At Verisk, being a good corporate citizen means we value, monitor, and beneficially affect our communities and society at large,” says CEO Scott Stephenson. The firm’s risk analytics and modeling are good for business too, as handling more than 10 million gigabytes of information across 100 countries helped generate $500 million in profit last year, up tenfold since listing on Nasdaq in 2009. Whirlpool Industry: Consumer Durables & Apparel Benton Harbor, Mich. The home appliance maker scores well on worker treatment -- it achieved a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s U.S. Corporate Equality Index for 13 years -- but it especially shines on the product side of things. The company has focused on improving energy and water efficiency. A new hybrid heat pump cut energy use in a new dryer model by 70%, and Whirlpool’s dishwashers use about half the water and energy they did just 10 years ago. 'See all Consumer Durables & Apparel Companies on the Just100'

Marriott International 'Industry: Consumer Services Bethesda, Md. The world’s largest hotel chain talks a lot about doing right by workers and has the bona fides to back it up. The company extended health insurance coverage to all part-time employees after 9/11, and its average hotel general manager sticks around for more than 25 years. “Taking care of our associates is the foundation of our core values and reinforces our philosophy that the most sustainable way to lead a successful company is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity and support to succeed, grow and live their best life,” says CEO Arne Sorenson. 'See all Consumer Services Companies on the Just100'

The largest food distributor in the U.S. is also the most just company in the food & staples retailing industry due in large part to its worker-friendly policies and community involvement. For its employees, Sysco pays a living wage, offers stock at a discount and contributes as much as $500 towards Health Savings Accounts; for the community around it, Sysco spends millions of dollars each year to fight hunger. “It just makes sense for Sysco to focus on food and make it our charitable priority,” says Sysco CEO Bill DeLaney. 'See all Foods & Staples Retailing Companies on the Just100'

'PepsiCo 'Industry: Food, Beverage & Tobacco Harrison, N.Y. Pepsi pays more than lip service to the idea of diversity. 'See all Food, Beverage & Tobacco Companies on the Just100'

'Varian Medical 'Industry: Health Care Equipment & Services Palo Alto, Calif. Mission-driven employees find it easy to get on board at a company that makes devices for treating cancer patients, but that’s just part of a virtuous cycle that benefits workers, customers and investors, says CEO Dow Wilson. “Doing good helps us do well, and doing well helps us do good.” Varian also scores highly for managing its environmental footprint, filing annual sustainability plans and aiming to divert 80% of solid waste from landfills by 2020. “The cost of taking care of your garbage isn’t going down,” says Wilson. Reducing the need for it is good for the bottom line. 'See all Health Care Equipment & Services Companies on the Just100'{'position':15,'title':

Humana boasts one of the best job creation track records in Corporate America, with its U.S. workforce growing from 32,000 to 52,000 employees since 2011. The swell is thanks to rising demand for health insurance under Obamacare, but the insurer also highlights health in house. Involvement in the company’s fitness programs has helped workers cut health risks by 16% over the past two years. “We’ve seen firsthand that health is local, health is social and health is hard,” says president and CEO Bruce Broussard. 'See all Health Care Providers & Services Companies on the Just100'

'Colgate-Palmolive 'Industry: Household & Personal Products New York, N.Y. The consumer products powerhouse sells four out of every ten tubes of toothpaste in the world, but has an eye on philanthropy and sustainability too. “We’ve set visible goals that take us deeper into the areas where we can truly make a difference,” says CEO Ian Cook. That includes the free dental screenings Colgate has provided for more than 850 million children in 80 countries and a stated plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020. That’s not to say Cook isn’t focused on profits: Colgate has pocketed $500 million in energy cost savings since 2002. 'Microsoft 'Industry: SoftwareRedmond, Wash. Microsoft isn’t leaving all the do-gooding up to billionaire founder Bill Gates: the company outranks its competitors on the Just list as a result of its worker treatment and diversity. “We must strive to reflect the people we serve,” says CEO Satya Nadella. “We are focused on making measurable progress in areas where we have particular challenges – both at Microsoft and in the technology industry as a whole – such as representation of women and minorities.” One unique effort is the launch of a hiring program for people with autism. F5 Networks, Inc. 'Industry: Tech Hardware & Equipment Seattle, Wash. Competing against other tech firms like Amazon, Microsoft and Cisco for workers is no picnic. So CEO John McAdam is obsessive about reeling in top talent and keeping them happy. He carefully reviews stats like the acceptance rate on job offers every Monday afternoon -- “We’re actually quite anal in terms of following the data.” -- and top-performing employees get named to the “Five Star Club,” with perks like weekend getaways to Hawaii and Cabo.
