Step into the Future: Top Luxury Sedans of 2016

When purchasing a luxury sedan, there are many competitive brands and vehicles to choose from, each with unique options and features. It can be difficult to decide the best one for you amongst all the choices available.

For 2016, many manufacturers have re-designed and updated their luxury sedans, so there are several important factors to consider when looking for your next vehicle. Most will offer great base features, but some brands focus on power, feel, and a sporty drive, while others have more luxurious features that emphasize interior and comfort. Price, performance, safety, handling, response, and technology packages are other factors to consider as well.

Because of the sheer number of choices available, it is a good idea to decide what the most important features you’re looking for are and compare the different models available, so you can purchase a car that will be enjoyable to drive while meeting your specific needs.

Audi A6 (MSRP: $48,550)

The Audi A6 has been ranked at the top of the luxury mid-size sedan segment for several years, and the 2016 version is no exception. With its current powertrain, the A6 has a smooth and luxurious, easy-to-drive feel and responsive handling. The A6 also has strong performance on the road, with a super-charged 3.0-liter V6 engine. Most of the car remains similar to the 2015 model, but with some adjustments to the headlights and tail lights, to add to an overall attractive styling. Cabin noise is a minor issue compared to some of the other cars in the luxury segment with quieter rides.

Overall, the A6 is one of the best luxury sedan options available, with strong performance, power, handling, and styling. Some engine upgrades and packages might be steep in terms of cost, pushing the price up into the $60,000 range, but Audi’s midsize sedan is well worth a look.

BMW 5 Series (MSRP: $51,195)

BMW has a reputation for excellent vehicles, with a motto that proclaims the brand as, “the ultimate driving machine.” The drivetrain and handling offer a good combination of precision and power, but in most reviews of the 5-Series, most owners admit that this model could use an update.

There’s also a myriad of engine options: a four-cylinder, inline-six, a V8, a gas-electric hybrid, and a diesel inline-six. Each version has an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all models except for the hybrid offer all-wheel drive as an option. One negative however is the cost for various engine upgrades and package options. Upgrades can push the price well into the $70,000 range and sometimes even higher.

Compared to other vehicles in this segment, the BMW 5-series is not the flashiest or advanced vehicle available. The 5-series could use fresh updates and better overall driver engagement, but the variety of options available make this a flexible and solid choice for luxury buyers. It is worth noting that after 2016, BMW will fully redesign the model.

Cadillac CTS (MSRP: $46,555)

Cadillacs remain a bit less popular on the road when compared to the more renowned vehicles from competing brands, but the brand has been re-invigorated in the past decade and the CTS has been at the forefront of Cadillac’s overhaul.

The CTS offers excellent drive and handling, with a base turbo four-cylinder engine that puts out 268 horsepower. Other engine options include a 335 horsepower V6 and a 420 horsepower twin-turbo V6 Vsport, which might be the most exciting option. All models have rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hallmark traits of the CTS include a chiseled and modern exterior styling that has been somewhat smoothed into a more attractive look for 2016 when compared to previous versions.

Some downsides, however, include a complex interior outlay, and premium packages that can push the price into the $60,000 range. Overall though, the CTS remains an excellent yet underrated option in the luxury segment. The Vsport CTS has won Cadillac a number of awards in recent years and continues to push the brand into the future.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class (MSRP: $53,075)

Whereas rival luxury automakers in this segment might focus on sportiness, the Mercedes-Benz E-class focuses on luxury and comfort. The E-class enjoys a quiet and comfortable cabin. Performance is strong as well with a 241 horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbo four-cylinder engine with nine-speed automatic, with either real-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The E-class also has great technology features as well. The center console features as 12.3-inch infotainment screen that syncs with both Apple and Android phones. Automated emergency braking and lane-assist driving are also unique and modern safety features. Though not as powerful as previous models, the Mercedes-Benz E-class is a luxurious ride, with cutting-edge technology and safety features.

Volvo S90 (MSRP: $47,945)

Volvo has a reputation for making some of the safest cars on the road, and the Volvo S90 does an excellent job of combining that heritage with great style. There are two engine options, both of them four-cylinders and with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The first is a 250 horsepower turbo, and the other is a 316 horsepower supercharged turbo. It has a quiet cabin and with nice control, but the steering is a bit heavy. Though the engines leave something to be desired in terms of sporty driving, especially compared to some of the other options available in the luxury class, the overall styling and safety makes the S90 a great option.

From brands with a long history of power and performance, to those with updated lineups that include high-quality and luxurious options, there are a number of competitive choices available in the luxury sedan segment. When purchasing your vehicle, it can be difficult deciding between various makes and models. It is always a great idea to see a car for yourself and go for a test drive to make sure it matches your needs. No matter what you’re looking for in a luxury sedan, there is sure to be an option available out there that meets your specifications.
