*Featured* How to Create Purpose-Driven Brands
Oct 27, 2017 3:20 PM - 4:20 PM EDT
Carol is internationally recognized for her work in social purpose, and CSR. Carol Cone ON PURPOSE, is her return to her to her entrepreneurial roots and life’s passion: to educate, inspire and accelerate social purpose programs and impacts for organizations, nonprofits and individuals around the globe. For over 25 years, she’s embraced a steadfast commitment to building lasting partnerships between companies, brands and social issues for deep business and societal impact. She adamantly feels that today, companies and brands must stand for something beyond the bottom line. When she began her work, companies and brands questioned “if” they should engage with social issues. In today’s totally transparent, social world, it is now about the “how” brands and companies express their values and character through authentic engagement with society. She is also a recognized thought leader in Purpose, having conducted the world’s first research, then dozens of studies with business executives, citizens, employees and nonprofits to gain critical insights to inspire organizations to engage with society as wise business strategy. She is a sought after speaker and media expert, sharing her insights on purpose branding, corporate citizenship, sustainability and CSR. From 2010 - 2015, she created and led the Business + Social Purpose practice for Edelman, building it into a $25 million global group. There she personally serviced a variety of clients: Microsoft, Unilever, the American Lung Association, Girl Scouts of the USA, Southwest Airlines, PNC Financial Services, HP, the Bezos Family Foundation and Quaker, among others. She was the Founder, CEO and Chairman of Cone, Inc., recognized as the nation’s leading Cause Branding consultancy, leading it from 1980 - 2010. There she led the development of signature cause branding programs for forward-thinking Fortune 500 companies and not-for-profit organizations, including: the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, ConAgra Foods' Feeding Children Better, PNC Grow Up Great, the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Movement, P & G’s Live, Learn and Thrive, ITT Watermark, Western Union's Our World, Our Family and Reebok's Human Rights programs. Overall, Cone’s signature cause programs have raised more than $2.5 billion for various social causes. In 2007, PR Week called her "arguably the most powerful and visible figure in the world of Cause Branding." Programs she and her teams created have won hundreds of awards for excellence around the globe. Four of her campaigns are cases at the Harvard Business School. In 2009, she was one of two US judges for the first PR Lions Awards at the Cannes Festival of Creativity. Her first book, Breakthrough NonProfit Branding was published in 2010. Other key career highlights: hosting over 200 interns during her leadership of Cone; building a Habitat for Humanity house, as an employee engagement program and developing “Making Change for Katrina,” a nationwide coin collection program to fundraise for the Katrina disaster. Her most special moment: meeting the Dalai Lama, prior to her speech in Calgary, titled: “The Power of Business for Good.” When she met him, he held her hand for 5 minutes. It was about a week before she got the nerve to wash that hand!

Scott Sadler
Founder and President | Boardwalk Capital Management
B Scott Sadler, CFA is the Founder and President of Boardwalk Capital Management, an independent Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) practice focused on sustainable and impact investing for individuals. Scott is a 30-year veteran of the investment industry, having managed funds for prominent families, entertainers, athletes, corporate executives and lots of regular folks. Fresh as a graduate of the University of Virginia, Scott started his investment career in 1987, as a portfolio manager at Wachovia Asset Management. Over the next three years, he ruined each Spring earning his Chartered Financial Analyst designation. While it is arguable that hiring a 22-year old to manage money has a high potential for malpractice, to his knowledge no one was hurt, despite the stock market crash of 1987 just four months after starting his career. (He maintains that this was not his fault.) While at Wachovia, Scott launched, and for seven years, led the management team of the top-ranked Wachovia Emerging Markets Fund. The fund was the (second) love of his life, but a corporate merger put an end to that chapter. In 2002, he got back to his wealth management roots, joining Bank of America Capital Management and later Goldman Sachs, both in Atlanta. The financial crisis of 2008-09, along with the urging of Scott's wife, led to Scott's most recent and dramatic career shift -- toward what was then known as "social investing." Scott speaks often of how, like many investment managers, he initially branded this segment as "voodoo." But his research confirmed that Sustainable and Responsible Investing is a legitimate and financially competitive investment philosophy. Boardwalk Capital Management adopted sustainable and impact investment as its core management approach shortly after its founding in 2010. Today, the firm is proud to be the Southeast region's first wealth management practice that is also a Certified B Corporation. Scott has been married to Mary (Handorf) Sadler, Boardwalk's Chief Inspiration Officer for more than thirty years, and is the father of three grown or almost grown kids, aged 25, 23 and 17.

Amber Scott
Executive Director | Leap Year
Social Entrepreneurship from Grassroots to Scale
Oct 27, 2017 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM EDT
Amber Scott, Founder and Executive Director of Leap Year, is a social innovation leader with a proven ability to combine vision and business acumen for effective organizational creation and management. A child of first generation college students, the importance of higher education, and the power that it can have to raise a family out of poverty, was instilled at a very young age. However, today low income students struggle to attend and graduate from college, making economic mobility nearly impossible. Amber believes that the opportunity for higher education should be open to everyone, regardless of where you are born, so she founded Leap Year to challenge the status quo. Amber’s passion for social justice began with a trip to Kenya. Immediately following her college graduation, Amber traveled to northern Kenya with a $10,000 grant to build two water wells in hopes of decreasing the inter-tribal violence which was occurring due to local water scarcity. After returning to the US, Amber transitioned to a job with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta as a Project Manager for the Regional Commission on Homelessness. In this position she oversaw and implemented several innovative projects with local government and nonprofit agencies to help break the cycle of chronically homeless revolving through jails and emergency rooms. Amber leveraged her experience with her academic training by opening her own consulting firm, Carpe Diem Consulting. She worked as a nonprofit and social enterprise consultant following her passion for using business models to address the most pressing social issues. She holds a BA in Neuroscience from Smith College, and an MBA in Marketing and Strategy from The Ohio State University.
