Time made the announcement Wednesday morning, with a photo of women who included actress Ashley Judd, singer Taylor Swift, and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, the 'Today' show reported. 'The idea that influential, inspirational individuals shape the world could not be more apt this year,' Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said, per the 'Today' show. 'For giving voice to open secrets, for moving whisper networks onto social networks, for pushing us all to stop accepting the unacceptable, The Silence Breakers are the 2017 Person of the Year.' Here are five things to know about the Time persons of the year selection. 1. Not the first group named: It was the second time in four years that Time magazine named a group as its 'Person of the Year.' In 2014, the magazine named the Ebola fighters – the doctors and health care workers who risked their lives to treat those infected with the potentially deadly disease in the midst of a major outbreak – for the honor, noted 'Today.' 2. Fear paralyzed honorees for years: Time magazine reported that nearly all the people it interviewed about their experiences for the 'Person of the Year' story talked about 'a crushing fear of what would happen to them personally, to their families or to their jobs if they spoke up.' 3. Those affected included men and women: Time magazine wrote that those affected by sexual harassment and assaulted often included the 'most vulnerable in society — immigrants, people of color, people with disabilities, low-income workers and LGBTQ people …' Time pointed out actor Terry Crews and former actor Blaise Lipman have accused that they were sexually assaulted by Hollywood executives in the past. 4. 'Silence Breakers' predate Harvey Weinstein: While the tipping point of the #MeToo movement was the bulging allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein in September, Time featured allegations that pre-dated those charges, including Swift's court case against a former disc jockey in August and charges that led to the downfall of Fox News' Bill O'Reilly in April. 5. 'Silence Breakers' cross many professional fields: While the entertainment industry has been one of major focuses on charges of sexual harassment and assault charges, the alleged victims come from a wide swath of industries. Time points out that those affected included activist Tarana Burke, state senator Sara Gelser, food blogger Lindsey Reynolds, strawberry picker Isabel Pascual, entrepreneur Lindsey Meyer, and lobbyist Adana Iwu.
