Previously I graduated from Sidney Sussex, Cambridge after studying engineering and economics. I came to the United States in the late 60s and was a very young CFO before starting to work independently as a consultant doing assignments for the World Bank, the UN and others around the world. Some of my work has been very good ... some more controversial. My ethical foundation is very strong, and this has never been compromised. As a well trained Chartered Accountant I was better able to follow the money and connect the dots better than most ... as an economist I know something about how the socio-enviro-economic system functions ... and as an engineer I know something about how technology has progressed in the past five decades. I have experienced how powerful conventional accounting and related management systems are for improving profit performance ... and I have also learned about the dysfunctional of the data systems associated with impact on both society and the environment. For all practical purposes the world optimizes for profit and stock market value, and cares not a fig for the related impacts on society and the environment. This is insane. While there has been a growing interest in the triple bottom line conversation in recent years ... I think the TBL idea was first written about in 1995 ... the numbering of this idea seems to have stalled ... or maybe it is simply that I am not seeing it because the work in this arena is being done behind closed doors rather than something that is open ... or maybe there is really rather little going on! I am writing because I would like to get some leverage to change the way CFOs and others communicate with the C-Suite and investors ... making the conversation more effective and at much lower cost. Have you any thoughts on some sensible next steps? Peter Burgess _____________________________ Peter Burgess ... Founder and CEO TrueValueMetrics ... I was the last intake of Articled Clerks to work there before we relocated to Plumtree Court. It is of course now long gone! As is Plumtree Court. We have been working for the last 7 years on an impact measurement framework called TIMM (Total Impact Measurement and Management). There is a load of info on our website including case studies. www.pwc.com/totalimpact So there is work going on - but as you suggest much of it is under the radar as our clients are doing it for competitive advantage. I hope this is useful to you.
