My experience over the past 60+ years suggests that climate risk is far bigger than widely reported. Management analysis systems don't take the future into account at all well. This is a critical problem that needs to be fixed!

Jane continues to produce new research and has been the author or co-author on a number of important papers and reports, including Mercer's Investing in a Time of Climate Change (2015). In 2011, Jane received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Social Investment Organisation. In 2014, she was named one of Canada's Clean 50 leaders in the field of sustainable capitalism. Jane is an Honorary Research Associate at Oxford Universitys Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto. She holds a Bachelor of Economics and English literature with honours from York University and a Master of Social Science from the University of Amsterdam.

Bierbaum, PhD, is professor and former dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Environment and Sustainability. She also holds the Roy F. Westin Chair in Natural Economics at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on the interface of science and policy – principally on issues related to climate change adaptation and mitigation at the national and international levels. She currently chairs the Science and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility. She served on President Obama's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST), as an Adaptation Fellow at the World Bank, led the Adaptation Chapter for the Congressionally-mandated U.S. National Climate assessment, and was a review editor for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. She has served in both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. Government--as the Senate-confirmed director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s Environment Division, and in multiple capacities at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Ecological Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

As the primary lead on ESG, Emily has oversight over Manulife Asset Management’s ESG research agenda, works to engage with companies and portfolio managers on ESG issues, and sets the strategic direction for ESG investment for the firm. Before joining Manulife Asset Management, Emily was Head of ESG Research for Asia-Pacific at MSCI Inc., where she led a team of nine ESG analysts across the region, commencing her role in Beijing and later continuing in Hong Kong. Her team had oversight into research quality and issue identification for approximately 1,200 stocks, and under her leadership produced original research on the relevance of ESG to Asian and emerging markets, with a particular emphasis on China. Prior to that, she was a capital markets lawyer with Baker & McKenzie in Melbourne, Australia, with a focus on funds management, capital raisings, and REITs. After graduating in 1981 from The University of Aarhus as a master of Political Science he joined the Association of County Councils in Denmark. In 1985 he moved to the Danish Nurses Organization in Denmark where he had different management positions. He left the Danish Nurses Organization in 2001 to join PKA. Peter is a member of the board in The Danish Insurance Association and has previously been chairman and vice chairman of the board. He is the vice chairman in Forca Ltd (a company in the pension fund and life insurance industry). Peter is a member of the advisory board of The Danish Climate Investment Fund for climate investments in emerging markets and member of the advisory board in Axcel Ltd (leading Danish private equity Company). Peter was a member of the board of Concito in 2008-2010 (CONCITO; Denmark's green think tank, founded September 2008. DiNapoli is the 54th Comptroller of the State of New York who’s known for his integrity, independence and steadfast leadership. Since taking office in 2007, Tom DiNapoli has aggressively fought misuse of public resources, strengthened one of the nation’s top public pension funds, and consistently spoken out against fiscal gimmicks, imprudent actions and government inefficiency. His life of public service started when he was elected as a trustee of the Mineola Board of Education, becoming the first 18-year-old in New York State to hold public office. The New York State Comptroller manages the State’s $178.1 billion pension fund, audits the spending practices of all State agencies and local governments, oversees the New York State and Local Retirement System, critically reviews the New York State and City budgets, and approves billions in State contracts and spending. A diligent fiduciary of the State pension fund, Comptroller DiNapoli continues changing the way the fund operates to increase transparency and establish strong internal controls, ensuring the strongest investment performance and ethical operations. Comptroller DiNapoli examines State, city and local finances and provides an independent, credible analysis of government finances. In January 2013, he launched a Fiscal Monitoring System to rate communities on their fiscal condition, sending an early warning to those in trouble. Prior to becoming Comptroller, Tom DiNapoli represented the 16th Assembly District in northwestern Nassau County for two decades. During his tenure, he chaired the Local Governments Committee, the Consumer Affairs Committee, the Ethics Committee, the Governmental Operations Committee and the Environmental Conservation Committee; sponsored legislation that helped Nassau County to emerge from serious fiscal distress and restore fiscal responsibility; and earned a reputation as one of the State’s leading voices on environmental issues.

jack ehnes.jpg JACK EHNES CEO California State Teachers' Retirement System Jack Ehnes is the chief executive officer of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System. Mr. Ehnes provides leadership for the largest educator-only pension fund in the world. CalSTRS administers a hybrid retirement system, consisting of a traditional defined benefit, cash balance and defined contribution plans, as well as disability and survivor benefits. CalSTRS serves more than 914,000 members and benefit recipients. The asset value of the investment portfolio was $213.7 billion as of August 31, 2017. CalSTRS administers retirement benefits for California’s public school educators in grades kindergarten through community college. Mr. Ehnes came to CalSTRS in 2002 from Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company (Denver, Colorado). Among his duties as vice president for corporate affairs, Mr. Ehnes served as the trustee/plan administrator for Great-West’s employees’ defined benefit and defined contribution plans. Prior to Great-West, Mr. Ehnes served as the Colorado Insurance Commissioner, deputy insurance commissioner and board trustee for the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association, which included six years as chair and vice chair of the board. Mr. Ehnes is currently chairman of the FTSE Environmental Markets Advisory Committee and a member of the FTSE4Good Advisory Committee. He also serves on the boards of the National Council on Teacher Retirement, Ceres (a national network of investors and environmental organizations working to address sustainability challenges), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Foundation Board, and the Public Employees Board of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. As a recognized leader and public servant, Mr. Ehnes has served on high-profile national task forces throughout his career including those with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and on various healthcare and insurance commissions and advisory boards. He was also a board member of the National Institute on Retirement Security and board chair of the Council of Institutional Investors.

Patricia Espinosa photo 2017.jpg PATRICIA ESPINOSA Executive Secretary United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Ms. Espinosa took office as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on 18 July 2016. Ambassador of Mexico to Germany since 2012 and from 2001 to 2002, Ms. Espinosa was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico from 2006 to 2012, bringing more than 30 years of experience at highest levels in international relations, specialized in climate change, global governance, sustainable development, gender equality and protection of human rights. As Mexico's representative on multilateral bodies and international organizations in Vienna, Geneva and New York, Ms. Espinosa has been engaged as leader in the global challenge to address climate change and its consequences, notably as Chair of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC leading to the adoption of the Cancun Agreements. Named by the UN Secretary-General to the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post 2015 Development Agenda, she is a tireless supporter of multilateralism as a way to improve conditions for development in all regions of the world, understanding the inextricable link between the aims of the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. Elected Chair of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly (1996) she played a key role in the process leading to the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action at the 4th World Conference on Women. Previous Ambassador of Mexico to Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and UN Organisations in Vienna (2002-2006), she was Chief of Staff to the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1989-1991) and responsible for economic issues at the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the UN in Geneva (1982-1988).

She heads Ceres’ strategy for mobilizing U.S. insurance companies to address the myriad hazards and opportunities of climate change. In this capacity, she oversees Ceres’ research, as well as company and regulator engagement activities focused on insurers’ financial risks related to climate change. In her role, Cynthia leads Ceres’ effort to communicate climate change’s potential to cause increasingly destructive impacts on human safety and economic security. Cynthia has co-authored two reports on the connection between climate change and insurance company financial stability: Assets or Liabilities? Fossil Fuel Investments of the Top 40 US Insurance Groups and Stormy Future for Insurers: The Growing Costs and Risks of Extreme Weather Events. Cynthia frequently speaks at insurance industry gatherings and to the media on these topics. Prior to Ceres, Cynthia was the senior global program manager of the insurance practice at Accenture where she conducted research and analysis on business and technology trends, and their impact on company performance. Cynthia also consulted to U.S. and international companies and non-profits working on diverse issues such as financial literacy and sustainability.

As Controller, she continues to serve the Board as its fifth voting member. Ms. Yee was first elected to the Board of Equalization in 2006 where she represented 21 counties in northern and central California. She was elected to her second four-year term in 2010. Now serving as the state’s chief fiscal officer, Ms. Yee also chairs the Franchise Tax Board and serves as a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) Boards. These two boards have a combined portfolio of nearly $500 billion. Ms. Yee also serves on the Ceres Board of Directors. As a member of the State Lands Commission (and chairperson in even-numbered years), she helps provide stewardship of public-trust lands, waterways, industrial wharves, marine terminals, pipelines, and resources through economic development, protection, preservation, and restoration consistent with the state’s environmental needs. The development and extraction of oil, gas, and geothermal resources are part of the Commission’s purview, as well. Through other financing authorities, Ms. Yee is dedicated to creating incentives that will increase the number of affordable housing units in California, given that demand consistently outpaces supply.

The registration desk at One UN Hotel, will be open all day - from 7:00am until 7:00pm - to accommodate those attendees who may arrive later in the day.

PLEASE NOTE: U.N. security will not allow luggage, backpacks or personal items larger than 14' (35cm) wide x 13' (33cm) high x 4' (10cm) deep into the UN Headquarters. It is strongly recommended that attendees check their bags at their hotel to be picked up later in the day. There will be limited luggage check available for attendees in the Manhattan Room (registration site).

WHEN IS THE SUMMIT? The Summit will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Registration and breakfast will open at 7:00 a.m. The Summit program will begin at 9:00 a.m. There will be a luncheon at 12:30 p.m., and afternoon sessions from 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. There will be a networking reception from 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.

WHERE WILL THE SUMMIT BE HELD? The Summit is held at the United Nations Headquarters (1st Avenue between 42nd and 45th Streets) in New York, New York, USA.

WHO WILL ATTEND THE SUMMIT? Given space limitations at the UN, the Summit is by invitation only. Invitees will include selected asset owners, pension fund fiduciaries, state treasurers, state and city comptrollers, asset manager and financial services firms, insurers, foundation leaders, labor leaders, business executives and UN officials, among others.

WHO IS ORGANIZING THE SUMMIT? Ceres, the U.S.-based non-profit organization that coordinates the Ceres Investor Network on Climate Risk and Sustainability, is co-hosting the Summit with the United Nations Foundation and the United Nations Office for Partnerships.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE SUMMIT? The Summit is by invitation only. Each person that is invited receives a link to register for the Summit.
