Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess

ABOUT THIS GROUP

The Circular Economy 2.0 (#CircularEconomy2) group intends to discuss and find ways to innovate adding a Humansphere in-between the Biosphere and the Technosphere within the Butterfly Diagram.

Inserting a Humansphere is the recipe for genuine innovations for future business success stories based on endless job creation. Humans represent an endless stock of energies, matter and resources. Why not taping into this stock to reduce our needs for energy? Are technologies replacing Humans really innovative and why is that so? How will a 'Jobless Growth' future unfold with no alternative pathways? How to innovate in CE without discussing the central role of the social dimension and solutions to move us away from a wealth-centered linear world? Avoiding Circular consumption rebound, is this our real objective?

Designing a Circular Economy without thinking of the needs of the people as core to the model might not generate the expected results, and would lead us to the expected Circular Rebound (Zink & Geyer, 2017). Focusing on social needs over material circularity might be a better goal (Allwood, 2017), an early vision depicted by economist-historian Karl Polanyi.

Designing a Circular Economy based on Circular Value (#OCV) could lead to a much more balanced world.

Value is perceived if people are involved: Optimizing Circular Value (#OCV): https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/optimizing-circular-value-1-alexandre-lemille

Waste & poverty are human creation. This new economic era has the power to eradicate both: the focus axis of [Poverty=Waste]™ while changing the meaning of 'success'.

And no utopia here, it's just doable. Remember Nelson Mandela's quote: 'It always seems impossible until it's done'.
