Make a Difference with Action on SDG 13

SDG 13 calls to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” Its targets address:
... resilience to climate-related hazards and natural disasters;
... making climate change and low-carbon development part of national strategies;
... education and awareness raising;
... and mobilizing US $100 billion annually by 2020 to address the mitigation needs of developing countries.

Why Take Action?

Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are driving climate change, which affects every country in the world by threatening global development and undermining the foundation of the global economy. Already, crop yields have declined, the sea level has risen, and people are experiencing more extreme weather events. The poorest and most vulnerable people are affected the most, but “emissions anywhere affect people everywhere.”

Your Business Opportunity

Temperature increase can still be limited to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, but it requires changes in behavior and technological measures to enable “leapfrogging” to cleaner, more resilient economies. Companies can show leadership by setting emission reduction targets, reporting on performance, increasing investment in renewable energy and low-carbon technology, promoting carbon pricing, and supporting political action to address climate change.

One of climate change’s most tangible impacts is on public health; through harming the water supply, increasing vector-borne disease, and increasing extreme weather events. Learn from Leaders Making Cities More Resilient to Natural Disasters and Climate-Related Hazards IBM 'IBM and AECOM worked together with the United Nations’ Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) to develop a scorecard to measure cities’ resilience to natural disasters. The scorecard will help cities improve preparedness to disasters by reviewing policy and planning, engineering, informational, organizational, financial, social and environmental aspects of disaster resilience in 80 assessment categories. Inspired by UN’s Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient, this tool enables cities to prioritize needs, track and measure the progress cities make, and identify major areas of weakness – before a natural disaster identifies these for them. Additionally, in the public domain, it will strengthen the understanding of what it takes to protect lives and will help facilitate a more rapid economic recovery. CO2Logic

'CO2logic’s mission is to help organizations become carbon neutral. We do this by assessing and reducing our client’s carbon footprints and by supporting sustainability projects with our client’s support. One project is Wanrou, in which CO2logic works with EcoBenin to provide woodstoves to communities in Benin, Africa. Open-fire cooking required a lot of time, effort, and wood, and created many health and environmental problems. The woodstoves use half the wood and time as open fires. They also reduce smoke, improving health and the local environment. This project is important to CO2logic because it achieves multiple sustainability goals and helps communities.'
