Facebook put the lives of the people I manage in danger when they decided to hire right-wing think tanks to create smear campaigns against Color Of Change and other justice organizations. They used racism, anti-Semitism and fear to discredit us and open us up to attacks because we had the audacity to demand better for Black people who use their platforms. The New York Times report detailing this disgusting strategy designed by Facebook executive Joel Kaplan led myself, Brandi Collins-Dexter and Arisha Hatch to demand a meeting with top Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, to confront them.1 We are not afraid to go where the fight is and right now, we have the plan to hold Facebook accountable. From the boardroom to your inbox, we will win. Will you join us by donating $4 for this campaign today? Only hours after our meeting, we became aware that Sandberg knew even more than she was willing to admit.2 But whatever turns out to be true, what we do know is that a firm—either on the orders of, or with the tacit consent of Facebook—sought to discredit and undermine our work. Discrediting Black people is not new, it is the same dirty tactic that the state and law enforcement agencies have done for years with devastating impact. Entire generations of Black leadership have been killed and incarcerated for the very same rumors and conspiracies that Facebook hired these agencies to create. With your donation we will: Build a secure network to support whistleblowers and Black tech workers at Facebook and other silicon valley companies. Develop a strong shareholder and investor facing strategy that forces Facebook to answer to both users and owners. Create infrastructure and spaces for activists, journalists, users, tech workers, shareholders, and government ready to go toe to toe with giants to come together. Two weeks ago we learned that we are in the crosshairs of one of the biggest corporations on the planet. We remain determined on behalf of our members, the Black community and everyday people to holding Facebook accountable. After our meeting with Sandberg’s office we secured a verbal commitment from Facebook and Sandberg herself that they would put time, energy and resources towards ensuring the success of a full scale civil rights audit on their platform and to make the findings of the audit to date public before the end of the year. While Facebook committed to engage directly with our concerns, we made a commitment that we would continue to hold them accountable both behind closed doors and publicly. In the digital age, it is no longer just state forces that will do irrevocable harm to us and the values we believe in. Massive corporate platforms like Facebook uphold the same monstrous realities that jeopardize our lives every single day. Color Of Change is one of the only organizations out there willing to go toe to toe with Facebook; we are uniquely equipped to force real change for our people on and offline. We won the civil rights audit that forced transparency from Facebook, and we will continue to win with your help.
