Donald Trump’s first official state visit to the U.K. in June was met with massive protests and jokes galore. It’s obvious Trump made a mockery of himself and his administration in Britain, but something is still unclear: why were Donald Trump’s adult children on the trip?
All of Trump’s children and their spouses were treated to his state trip: Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Eric and Lara Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Tiffany Trump.
Of this group, only Ivanka and Jared have any role in the Trump administration. That means American taxpayers are potentially paying millions of dollars so Trump’s family can enjoy a vacation together—and meet the Queen while they’re at it.
A White House official told CBS that Trump’s three children who aren’t part of his administration are “personally paying” for the trip, but given Trump’s track record of bilking taxpayers on Mar-a-Lago and golfing trips, it’s questionable whether his children are actually digging into their own pockets for their U.K. holiday. They’ll need to show proof of that claim before we believe it.
Even if Eric, Donald Jr., and Tiffany Trump are paying for U.K. lodging and travel themselves, they’re still incurring taxpayer-funded Secret Service expenses. Those expenses can be incurred even if Trump’s family isn’t with him, but given the heightened security for Trump’s state visit, the costs are likely quite high.
This can never happen again. State visits aren’t vacations. It’s completely inappropriate to treat them like family holidays funded by taxpayer dollars.
