ACEEE's September Newsletter
ACEEE Hello friend, We hope you had a great summer and a relaxing Labor Day weekend. As we begin a new school year and a new fall season, we look forward to our upcoming 2019 State Scorecard, Energy Efficiency as a Resource Conference, and the fourth annual Energy Efficiency Day. Please keep us posted on your endeavors! Best, Steven Nadel Executive Director Highlights SSI 2019 The 2019 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry, held last month in Portland, Oregon, drew near-record attendance. It sparked discussion on a range of topics, including strategic energy management (SEM), smart manufacturing, decarbonization, power grid of the future, blockchain, and cybersecurity. Amory Lovins and other speakers spotlighted ways to boost energy productivity and make every energy unit count. Christine Ervin, former US Assistant Secretary of Energy, explored the climate challenge. We introduced our Linda Latham scholars (top photo) and 2019 Champions of Energy Efficiency (middle photo). We also held the SEM summit, an Energy Future Exchange (EFEX) workshop, and the first Women in Energy Efficiency networking event. Listen to what our attendees said about this year’s dynamic biennial conference. Call for Action: EE Day Join us for the fourth annual Energy Efficiency Day on October 2 to extol efficiency’s multiple benefits: jobs, cost savings, cleaner air, climate change mitigation. You can sign up as a 2019 supporter (it’s free) and join the growing list of cities, counties, companies, states, universities, and utilities — not to mention the US Senate — that have issued a proclamation to recognize the day and efficiency’s value. Here’s our proclamation kit to get you started. ACEEE Speaks Out Against Lightbulb Rollback ACEEE speaks out against two new rules released by the US Department of Energy (DOE) that continue the administration’s assault on common sense light bulb energy efficiency standards. Coverage includes NPR, the Washington Post, Bloomberg, CBS, and other news outlets. NPR: How To Beat The Heat With EE ACEEE's Jennifer Amann discusses how you can use energy efficiency to achieve optimal cooling — even in the heat of summer. Reports & Blog Posts New College Sustainability Rankings by Kate Doughty Nearly two-thirds of prospective students say a college's commitment to the environment influences their decision to apply to or attend the school. But which colleges are the most committed? New rankings recognize leaders in 17 areas. We spoke to four highly ranked colleges. EPA Stalls Heavy-Duty Vehicle Economy Progress by Siddiq Khan The Trump administration’s efforts to roll back light-duty vehicle fuel economy standards have received a lot of attention. Much less known is its stalling of heavy-duty vehicle fuel economy standards, which increases fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions — significantly increasing health risks for all. Florida Cities Call for Stronger Utility Energy Savings by Annie Gilleo Utility efficiency programs are a critical tool supporting local government efforts to improve sustainability, reduce emissions, and promote job growth. But as cities and counties are working to ramp up energy savings, utilities are going backwards. Upcoming Events EFEX 2019 September 24, 2019, Brussels The Energy Future Exchange program is hosting a don’t-miss conference in Brussels to explore the power and potential of the transatlantic relationship to create clean, climate-friendly economies. Community News ACEEE is joining the Metropolitan Energy Center on two events designed to generate grassroots momentum for rental energy efficiency in the Kansas City area. The Renters Efficiency Summit (Sept 21) and the Landlord Efficiency Summit (Oct 12) will address two sides of the rental efficiency conversation by focusing on tenant energy rights, low-cost efficiency upgrades, rebates and incentives, and more. Metro Energy Center A new report by the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) explores the residential and small commercial grid-interactive building demand-side management programs at major utilities in the Southwest. The Getting to Zero Forum in Oakland on Oct. 9-11, co-hosted every other year by the New Buildings Institute and Rocky Mountain Institute, gathers leading policymakers, designers, owners, operators, and others interested in zero energy and zero-carbon buildings. The Natural Resources Defense Council issued a report on the first independent testing of the electricity use of smart speakers and video-streaming devices, which number more than 100 million in US homes. It found that, while most of them are very energy efficient, energy consumption could more than double for televisions awakened and controlled by voice commands (adding $2.5 billion to annual US energy bills) if simple TV design improvements are not made. Image result for nrdc logo On September 19, the Alliance to Save Energy will host its 27th annual black-tie Evening with Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards Gala to look back on four decades of progress and innovation and look forward to Active Efficiency and the promise of greater things to come. Earlier that day, it holds the Active Efficiency Collaborative Launch Briefing. This year, Cleveland continued to build strong climate momentum by becoming the first city government to earn the Green Lease Leaders designation.
