Burgess COMMENTARY
This should come as no surprise. The data show that people who control the money (investors, pension funds, banks, corporations, etc.) are 99% interested in money profit and related stock values and only talk about everything else ... but worse the talk is mainly structured to sound good so that stock values get a reputational bump. We need a radical upgrade of accounting so that social impact and environmental impact are numbered as rigorously as profit ... and seriously regulated. This is not rocket science ... but irresponsibility on steroids!

The latest on global deforestation, a report from NYDF, an organisation focused on monitoring forest loss and committing countries to halt it. We're losing forests faster than in 2014 when an agreement was signed by over 40 countries to significantly reduce deforestation rates.

Although Brazil is a known hotspot currently - and it's proven the fires there are closely linked to land clearing - there are other regions such as West Africa that show increasing tropical forest loss.

We know tropical forests are most at threat, and also that these are among the most efficient as carbon sinks.

This link is an update on the Amazon fires, with evidence showing their connection to deliberate forest clearing for growth in agriculture, mostly for livestock.

MAAP findings show Amazon fires 'coincide with areas intentionally deforested this year, with the cleared land then set ablaze to finish the agricultural conversion process.'

As the NYDF update tells, even when we know the problem well, and know what's needed to fix it, with commitments agreed to - we still can't stop plundering the resources that sustain us.
