Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess
An amazing response Christine at YES! Unsubscribe 4:48 PM (6 hours ago) to me Peter, Wow. Since I wrote to you just two days ago, another million people have read YES! stories online—and all of the top 10 stories are about racial justice. Vital conversations about racial equity and police brutality are happening nationwide right now—in our homes, in the streets, and even among our elected leaders. It’s inspiring to see, and to know that YES! is helping to make some of these conversations possible. I am so grateful to the many readers who have stepped up as monthly supporters of YES! to enable us to keep these stories coming. If at all possible, please support our racial justice coverage now when the opportunity for real change is within our reach. Sign up by June 10 and your monthly gifts for an entire year will be matched by a generous supporter. Thank you so much for reading, Christine Hanna YES! Executive Director YES! Magazine Dear Peter, This is hard. Over the past couple of weeks we witnessed the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police. We saw a White woman use her privilege to threaten a Black man’s life. We saw—and are still seeing—a groundswell of protests across this country demanding accountability and justice. Like many of you, I’m reflecting deeply on the devastating racism in our society and our institutions. The way Black lives are stolen and discarded, again and again. And on the ways that I, as a White person, am complicit in that system. I’m not alone. In the past week, more than one million people have read the story “My White Friend Asked Me to Explain White Privilege on Facebook. I Decided to Be Honest” on our website. There’s a great surge of people seeking resources to learn from and share. In the midst of all this, I’m immensely proud of and grateful for the work of YES! staff and writers—in particular, our Black writers and editors, who are producing daily racial justice stories despite a heavy emotional toll. YES! is helping White folks like me understand and practice antiracism and providing vital coverage of Black-led movements fighting for justice, with stories like “An Uprising Was Inevitable” by Zenobia Jeffries Warfield and “7 Ways Protestors Showed Up for Black Lives” by Lornet Turnbull. We are part of an ecosystem of people, organizations, media, and funders working toward racial justice. And I truly believe that as these movements grow, and their ideas spread, we can begin to shift what’s possible. YES! is an integral part of spreading these ideas and solutions, but we can only do it with your support. So I must ask you: If YES! in any way fuels your commitment to racial justice, please support our work by making a monthly contribution. You’ll support the writers and editors who keep these crucial stories coming. And your regular donations will ensure we can keep covering the movements for racial justice in the months to come. Because monthly support is so critical, one of our generous YES! community members has committed to match your monthly gifts for an entire year if you sign up by June 10, doubling the impact we can have together. Please, take a moment right now to support our racial justice coverage. I want to help If this is not a good time for you to support YES! with a recurring gift, I completely understand. Just let me know here and we won’t send you any more requests for a while. Thank you so much for reading, and for all you do to advance justice. In solidarity, Christine Hanna YES! Executive Director P.S. Will you help fund our ongoing racial justice coverage? Join our monthly supporters by June 10, and your monthly gifts for an entire year will be doubled.
